We just this month switched our 3 year old from a crib to a twin. We were moving and were temporarily in a corporate apt that didn't have a crib. So she slept in a queen for a week and didn't fall out...and we decided to get her her own bed once we moved into our permanent digs. The transition could not have been easier. Toddler beds may work for some but I'm happy we went straight to a twin; it will last her far longer and we didn't have to spend any money on a piece that may have had limited use/may have been outgrown more quickly.

Adding to the basic sewing skills suggestions: knowing how to properly sew on a button, mend a seam by hand, sewing a blind hem on pant legs or skirts, how to thread/maintain a sewing machine, sew a straight and curved line on a sewing machine. All skills that can be mastered fairly easily with attention and effort.

Related: how to iron/press one's clothes properly. My father taught me how to properly iron a shirt as a preteen and I've never forgotten. Saves a lot of money, if you have the time, as you can skip the dry cleaners.

As with others, I've gotten a lot of pleasure and savings out of skills like crochet, knitting, canning, home cooking.

another renter here. like malebel, we use the redi-shade blinds in our daughter's room to block out the light. pretty sure my husband found them on amazon, too. they aren't of the highest quality but they do the job fairly well. try to cut them to size as accurately as possible to minimize light leaks on the edges.

good luck!

what most people said; don't be afraid to hack back the basil quite a bit. i trimmed my basil at least 3 times last summer and without fail it rebounded beautifully each time. made at least three huge batches of pesto (about 4 cups in each batch) from the several plants i had (i think i had 5-6 plants total). also made an herb rub for salmon with some of that basil (also adding fresh oregano and parsley, held together with EVOO) and froze that too. such a treat to eat them months later! wouldn't have been able to do so if i hadn't pruned the plants back as i did.

we use milk crates from the container store (http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10000531&N=&Ntt=milk+crate) inside of an expedit shelf from ikea as toy storage in our daughter's room. the shelf is white, and the crates are in an assortment of fun, bright colors. the crates fit nicely into the spaces with a little room to spare over the top and in front, when you push them all the way in. it's not as "clean" a look as i think you might be looking for, but it's very tidy, kinda funky, and it's easy to see what's inside. just one more idea to throw into the hopper, really...

this color, though blue, sort of tonally reminds me of the gray wall in this recent nursery tour on this very blog:

a dark color like the one you've already chosen/used/want to keep could look really great paired with some carefully chosen brights. maybe get some paint chips in accent colors and play around? once you've found some accent colors you like, you could maybe then go about finding furniture and decorative objects in those colors...

we used the pad for most of the first year with a towel neatly laid on top of it. towel got soiled? we put a new one down. i have a sizable collection of fun, inexpensive vintage towels in bright colors, it looked cute and it was easy to change out when she had a poo/pee accident/spillage/whatever.

now we just use a towel on the bed or floor as a changing pad instead, have been doing so since close to the end of our daughter's first year (she's nearly 20 months now). seems easier in general actually. all changing supplies get popped into a dresser drawer in her bedroom. piece of cake and having to make room for a changing table isn't necessary (which is good, because her room is fairly small). win-win.

last year when we were living in manhattan, we had a TINY bathroom (seriously, the door didn't even open all the way, it actually HIT the toilet).

it came with very little storage (the cabinet that held the sink thankfully came with some very small drawers). to mitigate this oversight, we put up some shelves near the ceiling, well above head height, where we could store a few extra towels and a basket filled with bathroom items that we felt we needed but didn't need *all the time*. when we needed to get things out we just briefly stepped on the toilet lid to access them.

not the most ideal solution, but it worked for us at the time.

good luck!

not sure what to suggest, beyond putting the cat bowl out of reach somehow. we have a baby gate at the mouth of our tiny galley style kitchen, it keeps our 16 month old out of the cat's food etc. as well as from getting underfoot. works ok for now.

sort of related...my niece (she's 3 now) likes to get into the dog's bowl and eat the dog's food. instead of trying to stop her, they decided to just buy better food for the dog. not advocating this by any means (in fact, the thought makes me ill). i gather they got sick of trying to stop her? they are pretty relaxed parents overall, but i dunno, going too far with going with the flow, perhaps??

i second meret's suggestion of the vintage thrift shop...i consistently made good scores there when i lived in the 'hood, and went several times a week. they do a really nice job of making things fairly affordable and displaying it nicely. their clothes can be somewhat expensive, but the housewares are a steal.

in chicago, i'm starting to love the unique thrift store chain. very organized, very affordable.

and agreed with the suggestion of thrift town in san francisco, it's hands down, one of the best thrift stores on the planet. all the goodwills in SF are pretty superb too. i wonder what makes SF/bay area thrifts so amazing?

we live on a busy street in NYC, and have many of the same noise problems. we have our bedroom in the back of the apartment, away from the windows (which are in the living space), which helps with the noise some. we also run a fan at all times and now that it's summer, the air conditioner helps dampen the noise as well. is there any way you could place your bed on a wall far away from the windows? i think the best thing to do is to think creatively, the other commenters have some great suggestions!

agreed with auburn...many docs recommend waiting to introduce solids until after 6 months these days anyway. babies will let you know when they are REALLY ready for solids, and it's not as early as most people think or would like (though it's different for every baby and every family). i know in our case it wasn't until 8 months or so that our kiddo really got interested in in soilds, we skipped right over the tedious puree stage altogether. now she's a big fan, and it's her that's leading the way. :)

i pretty much only make salads with spinach...i like the flavor much better than other greens, and it's good for you! :)

one of my favorite salads using spinach also includes yellow pear tomatoes, grapes, raw walnuts, gorgonzola cheese (or another nice similar blue), & sliced raw carrots, topped with a simple basalmic vinagrette.

we just bought the antilope high chair in red...inexplicably, the tray that comes with it only comes in white. i.e., no matching red tray for a red chair. i personally would have preferred a matching red tray, but hey. not too bad for around 25 bucks. :)
