We painted one of our sets of stairs with grey porch paint and love it!

We do a lot of work in our house and kitty thinks that any drop cloth left on the floor is an invitation to pee, for some reason. Scrubbing the floors with natural bleach alternative has worked very well when the enzymes aren't doing the job. As a landlord, I would never dream of renting a house before I resolved that issue! You should ABSOLUTELY negotiate lower rent.

Lonely Planet- all the way. Got me around the world for 20 months, I depended on their books daily... and recommendations of locals and other travelers.

We use a milk crate, too! And you can buy things like them at Target, etc. So much easier and more useful.

I'm still looking for a Domino replacement. Not a big fan of the online magazine format.
Living, Etc. is such a big investment for a magazine, I wish we could just bring Domino back...

I've admired Jen's art for quite some time- it's great to see her house. I can see why she moved for it- gorgeous.

The only reason to spend that much is if you'll spend the next two years saying "there was this couch that I absolutely loved but I didn't get because I didn't want to spend a little extra."
Don't let logic get in the way if you are in love.

I have a few potted plants on mine, but it is mostly used for my cat. She loves to watch the neighborhood from above and I can leave the window open without worrying about her going anywhere.

I think you should choose two shades of grey that lean towards blue for the walls and woodwork. That would look great with your furniture and it'd allow for continuity between rooms.
The red, blue and yellow are too primary colors for me.
I'd also try to arrange the pictures differently- you could make a nice gallery of frames above that couch and it would fill in the space nicely.
I like the other room, but resist the temptation to hang pictures directly in the center of the box that is made by the moulding... Perhaps try a cluster of pictures or nothing at all. The painted moulding is already a nice wall design.

Spray paint or metallic paint will take a generic fan a long way. We have three in our house- one is silver, one red and one green. They're essential for city living in the summer. They can also help to circulate heat in the winter.
A quick fix for this fan would be to replace the tulip lights with a dome light. They sell these parts at Home Depot and it's very easy to do. Would clean it up considerably.
But I love the idea of wallpaper on the blades- very fun!!

At any major hardware store you can get contact paper-like film that can be adhered to your window. I think that someone makes it with designs in it, too. But you can also make designs in it pretty easily yourself.
The idea is that you can still get light in your room, but your window is no longer transparent.

It looks like the soil you have in the pot could be the kind they use in hanging planters that dries out very quickly (seems to have little pieces of styrofoam in it). Try switching to something more organic that will hold the water a bit more.
Succulents really should do well in the sun and without a lot of water....

The water that comes out of the drain holes will also do a number on any wood beneath it. So, if you do go for this project, be sure to place something underneath it for protection.
