Take a look at boat design. We've seen some excellent designs that we could imagine living aboard in less than 300 square feet. The kitchen/galley is always very pared down. Also don't scrimp up on comfort -- make sure the bed and any seating are places you really want to spend time. Limit electronics and get rid of the TV. Sounds exciting!

The shape of those bases are a too phallic for me. Can't get past that.

Totally agree with msdonnagirl and others. Derian's (not Dorian) regular collection is ridiculously expensive but it is attractive. This stuff just doesn't cut it.

Does anyone have a source for a nice line drawing of a house? I'd like to have one made as a house warming gift.

I want to franchise this. What a great idea -- especially in cities where people have small apartments.

Love the wallpaper. But I would KEEP GOING! See if the manufacturer makes a fabric in the same print and do drapes floor to ceiling -- this will soften the hard small square-ness of the room . I'd also like to see some pillows and padding to soften the seeting. Perhaps some nice deep built-in seeting (with added storage inside) on the back wall and the left wall would be more comfortable. Cheap to build and could be painted white then add cushions.

What a nice idea that a child would bring a bottle of wine or a bunch of flowers or a tray of cookies once in a while -- along with themselves, their friends, significant others, appetites and laundry.

I've found that for my own sanity I had to stop asking them to put their stuff away. So now, instead of nagging I just pick up the offending item (dirty flip-flops, jug of whatever fasting juice is currently in vogue, gadget chargers, etc.) and put it in the garage. Works like magic -- and I keep my blood pressure in check.

3 additional thoughts:

1. Sheets can feel wonderful in the store because they are coated with softeners and factory chemical -- but once you wash them they feel like burlap. If you're not sure about the quality, buy a pillowcase first and wash it a couple of times before investing in a whole set of sheets.

2. Threadcount should not be used as the final arbiter of quality. Many cheap sheets claim very high threadcount but are very rough once washed and wear out more quickly than real quality sheets. I'm a big fan of sheets from Wamsutta and The Company Store -- they're not cheap but they last forever -- and actually get softer with age.

3. I came across these wonderful bed leg covers to cover up the ugly plastic wheels and metal legs on a client's bedframe. http://www.bedboots.us/newsroom.php -- they really look great when you don't want a bedskirt.

May I ask the no-iron people how they do it? Maybe I'm OCD (I do buy starch in a six-pack) but even my t-shirts and turtlenecks need a litttle press to take care of the wrinkles that happen from folding. I look in the mirror and I just can't go out of the house like that. And what do you do with your napkins and tablecloths?

have to disagree with AMT230. The table is fine by the window -- gives you more space for traffic and to circulate. however i might suggest a small banquette with cushions and pillows to provide a comfy space to lounge while someone else is cooking. have seen some nice ones made from ikea cabinets.

Never jump out of an elevator that is stuck between floors. People frequently die from this. They jump foward and their feet land on the floor but the force of landing pushes their bodies backward into the open shaft. Death.

How about hanging a cowbell on a cord in the elevator until a phone is installed.

A thought: perhaps you could mount a bulletin board inside the cabinet doors so that when you're working it's visible but when you're not the space is less messy.

Love the pracitce of questioning whether a possession adds to the quality of your life. It's such a good habit.

Also appreciate the contrast of the dark oramental trim and simple furnishings. Would work on space planning a bit -- furniture seems to be lined up on the walls. Also agree that a judicious splash of color would improve the space.
