I agree with My Crappy House. I experimented with painting when I was in college (but wasn't very good at it) and it's not only time consuming and true hard work, but the painting and materials are also expensive. Please, people, have some respect for people's crafts. This is how they make their living. I'm someone who is always looking for deals and discounts on anything from sofas to hotel stays. But I will NOT try to bargain an artist down from the price he/she sets for his/her piece.

My husband and I bought a $1600 painting on the island we got married (Vieques) just before we were to fly back home to NYC. We pretty much got a bunch of the money we got as cash gifts and unloaded it at the gallery. We almost didn't make the flight out. I still remember that day when I walk past the painting hanging above of our sofa.

Don't really know much about SF neighborhoods, but how did you guys settle on these three? I live in NYC and though rent is super high, there are still some neighborhoods in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens where rent would be lower than the examples given here. Sure neighborhoods like WaHi, Inwood, Astoria or Bushwick may not be as hip as Williamsburg, Park Slope or Brooklyn Heights, but each neighborhood has its charms. Don't get me wrong, we pay a ridiculous rent even in these less "desirable" NYC neighborhoods, but it still cheaper than the examples given here. So my question is: Aren't there more affordable neighborhoods in SF?

I would add a rectangular dining table and use the dining are you have now as a little home office.

I use MapMyRun on my laptop and love it. It didn't occur to me to download it to my phone. Fixing that problem right now.

I have been making the bed every day since I moved into our new apartment in April and it makes me feel so good. It translated to doing the dishes and cleaning the surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom before I leave the house. It's so nice to come home after work to such a calming environment. I highly recommend it to everyone!

And I do agree that most of us will buy art for the love of it and not as an investment because we just simply don't have the resources (money & knowledge).
For me art is a beautiful luxury that I allow myself to NEED. And as many other collectors of anything out there, what I buy doesn't have to be a good investment, but it does have to be special.

I will also say this: I would rather spend $1k on a nice painting than on a crappy sofa.

Why don't you meet him in the middle with something like this:

I thought I would never liked these big leather couches, but went to a house last week that had too and it looked beautiful. Use pillows, throws and other room accents to soften the look.

Good luck!

Timely issue for me. I'm starting to the process of redecorating my living room and trying to decide if I should have a wall of bookshelves for my books. I really don't know what to do. My books are not particularly pretty and to tell the truth, I will probably not read them again (at least most of them). But if I don't display them, wouldn't the living room just lack "personality"? I wish I had an extra room for the books, but since I don't what in the world should I do? Donate or keep/display?
