Pajamas! I've unfortunately had several hospital stays and having my own clothes helped immensely. Even a bathrobe or cardigan wear over a hospital gown can make a big difference. Home Away From Home: Making a Hospital Stay More Comfortable |

I was actually inspired to use lots of candles around my apartment after seeing so many lovely candlelit homes on Swedish real estate sites. I mostly use white, unscented candles in these and these. I also like white fairy lights for areas where candles would be impractical. Make Like the Scandinavians & Keep Dark Days Away with Candles |

So I have a dilemma that fits right in with this article - how do people recommend dealing with a decorative item that has personal value but also looks incredibly trendy? I just inherited a portrait of some of my older relatives painted by an artistic family friend. I love the painting and it's well done, but displaying it makes me feel so self conscious knowing that vintage amateur portraits seem to be having a trendy moment. Any thoughts, AT readers? I live in an older apartment building where the heat is landlord controlled and gets turned on once it drops below a particular temperature at night. We have very old radiators that you can wrestle into one of two positions: on or off. It would be nice to have more control in order to be more environmentally friendly, but I usually end up leaving it off until my apartment starts to get really cold then turn it on again for the entire winter (unless we have freakish 80 degree weather in February). But I hate being cold - so much so that, even living in DC, I only turned on my AC window unit five days over the summer. When Do You Decide to Turn on the Heat? |

I love dollhouses! I don't let myself collect miniatures because I'm sure it would get out of control really fast, but I like to collect pictures of the miniatures I would buy :) There was a fun article in the New York Times last month on this topic: A Hobby Best Kept Small Collecting Miniatures: Dollhouses |

I second readers' suggestions of Playmobil, Calico Critters, or other high quality non-dollhouse dolls, particularly while they're young. These pocket dolls are also great. In a few years, the more expensive dolls might be a worthwhile investment! I still have my halfpenny dollhouse family, which survived about seven years of hard play and suitcase travel, waiting for my child. (Incidentally, why did Hearthsong stop selling halfpenny dolls??) Evi dolls aren't exactly cheap, but at $75 for a set of 7 they are less expensive than the Kathy Kruse dolls. Sources for Interesting Dollhouse People Good Questions |
