The only way I can get my one-year old and four year old to nap at the same time is to lie down with them in my bed. They seem to comfort one another while they sleep and sleep more soundly than they would independently.

I grew up in the suburbs and my folks never locked doors, even when they were out. I moved out into the big city and still never bothered much with locking doors. Then one morning some crazy woman wandered into my apartment. She didn't mean any harm but she refused to leave. I called the police and they took the woman away. After that I started locking my door.

I can see the impracticality of a bath in the bedroom, but the way Kathalal describes using this kind of space is wonderful!

As for the suction bowls...ever seen what happens when a very determined toddler pulls and pulls to get the bowl loose? With one good tug the suction gives and the food flies!

My daughter has been sleeping in the Ikea Vikare (a toddler bed that can be extended to a narrow full-length bed) for two years now. She's four and I expect we won't have to extend it for another year or so. We've bought another Vikare for her 1 year old sister who shares the room. The toddler size beds allow for some much needed play space in their tiny room.

I'm less concerned about bugs than I am about my toddler who, every time I turn around, is shoving another cookie pulled off the tree into her mouth. Next year I'll try the felt ornaments!

I lived in Europe without a dryer until my second chld came along. That's when I discovered that line-drying clothes for a family of four in an 800 foot apartment was causing mold that could only be remedied by an enormous, energy-sucking dehumidifier. In the spring and summer I still happily hang my clothes out but fall and winter my dryer is essential.

When my first husband and I split up, I left the house, the furnishings and a ton of books, clothes and music behind. I moved to another country and started over in a furnished rental, taking only a couple suitcases with me. Strangely enough, it wasn't a bitter break up. I just wanted a new life.

The only way to avoid mopping and laundering that I can come up with: strip the kid down to her diapers and set her chair in an inflatable kiddy pool.

My daughter goes to a public nursery school here in Italy. Her school lunch menu could also be the menu at a respectable trattoria. I've been told they only use organic produce and, much like what mschatelaine describes, all the students eat a hot meal with plates, cutlery, cloth napkins and tablecloths.
