I can't comment on the "cat or partner issue" but I will share how I handled moving in with my partner who had strong design preferences.

1) Don't rush into making changes. This has been his place for a long time and you want to be respectful of that.

2) That said don't be afraid to say things like "Huh. I think this coffee table might be too big for this space. Let's live with it for a while, but I may want to revisit it later." Or "I love the color of this bathroom, but it feels really dark and closed in to me. How can we make it brighter?"

3) Once you've made your thoughts known, you can then go back a little later and start talking about how you can make changes that please you both.

4) Prepare to negotiate. My partner loves animal skin prints. I loath them. I like white trim. He loathes it. We are moving into our first house soon - he gets to keep his animal prints, I get white trim. I asked for design control of the bathroom and the spare room. He gets the living area and the bedroom. We'll negotiate with the kitchen.

pvett: not at all, but I don't think of it as a problem if it's simply a one off. Meaning as long as there are no plans to mass produce and sell them it's (relatively) ok.

My partner and I don't live in a studio, but we do live in a 400 sf one-bedroom with a black lab and a 20lb cat. It's totally do-able.

Neither brave nor crazy - it's awesome! We have an orange living room and the two doors and the radiator are painted an eggplanty purple. It's a nice accent and grounds the orange-ness.

If the fabric is sturdy enough you could re-cover the chairs with it. Alternatively, you could make a table runner and place mats or take a section of it and frame it as art.

I say run with the idea like an awesome little bunny.

I LOVE Lucca! Well worth a trip to Ballard, especially when the Sunday Market is going on.

I've been to Antika many, many times and I have a really hard time believing that the piece was only $95. $195? More likely. $295? Even more likely. Also, Antika's stock is always in very good condition.

That said, I like the orange, but I would never paint real wood with such a nice grain.

After reading the story I really don't think that this site is a proper forum to be reposting. Obviously the people involved have some serious mental and emotional issues going on and it seems cruel to point fingers even if it is 'bathroom month'.

We use them for our counter-top compost pail and then toss them into the pile in the yard. We also use the kind for picking up dog poop.

I like #3. There is something about it's legs that mirror the chairs.

The ones who sleep in the buff may also be sleeping next to a LIVING, BREATHING, FURNACE. Like I do.

I would get a similar piece of art and place it on the other side of the sofa - creating two framing columns. I would then get a matching end table and lamp for balance.

I'm not a big fan of the place although the prices are reasonable.

Well, we start out in "F", because I'm always 10 degrees colder and he's the official bed warmer then we morph into "A" because, well, it's just what we do but we always end up in some variation of "H" (usually more leg crossing) and the occasional "D".

I guess in our case, one pose does not fill all.
