It looks like asbestos to me. We have it in our house and the home inspector said to paint it and ignore it or pay someone to come and take it out. Check if there are laws or by-laws concerning rentals and asbestos where you live, maybe the landlord will have to do something about it? Or ignore it- don't touch or disturb it (that's what we've done so far). The other one just looks like broken down old spray foam- it's just gross looking- not something to worry about. I say ignore both, they are not toxic to you if you don't mess with them.

Potluck? It feels a little "college" doesn't it? My husband and I host when we can actually host; pay for the food and drink and have the time and energy to proprerly entertain our friends. I would not bring a hostess gift to a potluck. I am probably already busting out a show-off worthy recipe and I'm bringing a bottle of wine.
