this is very cute - a lot of nice combinations like the clean white couch with patterned rug & ottoman, pink door next to the mirror, etc. However many, many of your decorations are small framed things and doodads - this clutters the nice shapes up.

I definitely have to be honest with myself and admit that I have more baggus than is environmentally necessary. They make great gifts too! I do find that, when not challenged by the need for compactness (i.e. when driving, which is how I do my biggest grocery runs), a bag that stands up is more functional. Oh but they are adorable. I've even considered the new leather line as a stylish purse.

is it my several years of watching tv on a laptop, or are a lot of these people really far from their tv?

thanks Mr. Modtomic - I had some thrifted RW that chipped like crazy, but i had always heard that some was more sturdy than others.

I always tell my brother I'm coming to visit HIM in Berkeley, but it's really the Berkeley Bowl & Monterey Market I miss the most. I have been known to fly home with a suitcase half full of baby avocadoes and blood oranges (not sure if that is legal?).

for those of us on a waaaaay lower budget, thrift shops often have a ton of cheapo bed frames with head/footboard - for a modern look I just bought the simplest one, painted it a solid color and feel like it does a good job. I prefer a higher bed so I can fit storage boxes underneath. Bed frame, $35, mattress, $500, that was more like it for me.

a lot of great choices here. I personally prefer having an office that does look office-y, and is more separate as a space - otherwise I am too tempted to just lie on the couch or make dinner during work hours! But that depends on work habits and apartment layouts, and I love the shelves and other details that combine work life with home life.

love it- sure, it's crowded in some spots but that is how some of us live (more is more - plus two people living in a very small space). I love the little juxtapositions - like what looks like an industrial/art studio stool with the columned side table in the living room pic - plus granny crochet offset by that clean white painted window frame.

first approach is to try to egg them along. It may well be - often is - that they haven't had good cooking and that is why they don't like X veggie/ingredient.

But after a while it is possible that certain things just have to be treats you have alone or when you go to a restaurant and you order different things. I think it is a really legit relationship problem, however. My SO does not like one of my favorite groups of foods - winter squash/sweet potatoes - and I deal with it, keeping those things for my packed lunch or nights alone, but garlic might be a dealbreaker.

What Do You Do When Taste Buds Clash?

I always remember my sister-in-law, who has outstanding taste, telling me she got an antique child's rocking chair, probably not particularly cheap, for a friend when they had a kid. A few months later they were talking and the friend was like "um, yeah, thanks, that seems like a great starter present for [husband] to refinish," like she had received a project to work on in addition to her child-rearing labors (so to speak). ah well.

BTW the use of the royal we is even more over the top in this story than the AT usual. How did "we" graduate from college? As a family friend once said, "got a mouse in your pocket?"

Vintage Goods or Antiques as Gifts: Yes Please!

agreed with mdorothy.. with both my furniture and my clothes, I've really tried to scale back announcing to people where it's from and how much it costs. I'll tell if they ask, of course!

and since you asked.. my Eames/Herman Miller side chair (upholstered, so not like a super fancy collectible), $3 at Goodwill, and my new mid-century upholstered side chair that kind of looks like a Saarinen knockoff, fished out of a dumpster at my university's library, make a good pair. I am also pleased with the two paintings on illustration board I bought at a thrift shop in NY - clearly the same artist, both women in abstracted color blocks, and surely a no-name but someone with a nice talent.

I like it for a small space - feels cozy but I think the neutral color would make it flexible enough for warm temps. Maybe not a super sunny space.

tip for those who don't like microwaving plastic - you can always bring your food in a plastic container, dump it into a reusable dish that you keep at work, and then microwave. That way you know for sure that you are microwaving something that won't harm you, plus you feel more like a civilized person eating out of a dish (if you're me). I do have one of those pyrex things but I am not sure I trust the lid with soup.

all of these seem like excess compared to a simple hook.. I'm about to move to a place with a very narrow entry hall and trying to figure out the best solution, if anyone wants to weigh in.

super cool.. I like that weirdo cork table/stool. Any sense of what "more affordable" actually means? They are like $3K for a table in their current line so I am not too hopeful...

I think dishes is about all you can safely do - anything else you perceive as messy or dirty is in the eye of the beholder. Rare is the person who does not like to eat off of clean dishes, though.

yay Philadelphia! I love this take on a layout that a lot of my friends have too.. I agree that a totally Modern/minimal take on a rowhome rarely works. Love the layers of different patterns -- I'm not sure I really "get" the kitchen (partly b/c the picture is a funny angle) but it's certainly styled well.

I realize it's not "color" exactly but I love that (I think?) you bought a scribbled-on chair?? What a cool and bold move.

I love much of this -- the assemblages in the first couple of pictures especially. I think I see what you are going for with the corner behind the white couch, with lots of white echoes, which is a cool idea but it looks a little crowded.
