I wonder how many of these pool owners actually swim.
One day AT is all about "minimal impact" and the next day it's all about conspictuous consumption and trophis for philistine hedge fund owners. That's freedom of speech!

I would dare to say that in poorer and rural areas, people give much more thought to it, that in neighborhoods with lots of Appartment Therapy readers. Like military service, memory has become a matter of social class.

Happy???? Memorial Day?
After leaving the US, for a country that really thinks of its war dead as each and everyone's son or daughter, I find the idea of a Happy Memorial Day at the beach or shopping - to be somewhat obscene.
For us, Memorial Day is truly what it's name means. A day of memory. Of mourning. TV broadcasting is replaced by films about individuals who gave their lives. Restaurants and theatres are closed. No one would dare celebrate it with sales and barbicues. No one would show such ingratitude.

Sometimes one or two "regular sized" functional and attactive furnishings are much less cluttering than multiple smaller pieces. With those wide windows, I don't think that you will have to worry about furniture ruining your sense of airiness. Just keep the window treatment to a minimum. Enjoy your new home!

As if growing thirsty cotton, by turning millions of acres of natural savannah into plowed fields, depleting water resourses and spewing insecticides, is somehow "greener" or kinder to the wildlife?

Uh, 200 books, multiplied by 2 screws equals 400 holes drilled in my wall. Wow! That really is a great organizing idea for my small space!
Great exercize too! Every time that I answer the phone, I'll first sprint to my handy bookmarker, to mark my place...
Guess that I'll need one of 'em in the loo too.
But... what will I do then with my old train tickets?

A $50 dollar gift for a kitchen sponge? Honey, people that buy that, don't wipe their own kitchen counters.

I always thought that urinals would make a wonderful design statement in ladies' bath rooms. I've got it ! How about urinals hung about 6 feet off the floor? Brave idea. Better yet, hang them upside down for target practice.
How about sleak door handles on the hinge side of the door? Cool design idea, huh?
Or elevator button panels without buttons, just nice smooth stainless steel panels?
How about stove tops set into the floor? (Don't worry about cooks with long skirts: Kitchens are no longer intended for preparing food, but rather for showing off the financial status and expensive taste of their owners.)

I lived in a housing project with a drain in the center. What a pain! The toilet seat was always wet. If anyone else had to pee after your shower, the whole house was tracked with muddy footprints.
Try washing a child, without stripping a joining in the wash.
My neighbors did not consider the design "European" but rather just plain slummy.

I dislike sweet drinks, but here is advise for those who do enjoy them:
Next week is Passover. Many Jews do not eat corn products during Passover and many major food manufacturers (Even Coca Cola) produce special runs for that market, using cane sugar. Look carefully at the labels.
This is a special opportunity for celiac sufferers as well - albeit the products have different taste. Potato starch is used in place of wheat.

Damn! I grew up with that stove in the last photo. My Mom cried when the gas company couldn't fix the broiler at age 40, because a replacement piece wasn't available. Then it didn't fit into the renovation... and my Mom cursed every tasteless steak and uneven cake that came our of the new stove.

You obviously do not have 2 year olds visiting your kitchen.
Nor 4, 6 or 8 legged visitors.
I do love slamming a kitchen drawer shut every now and then.

The blue and white tiles also reminded me of either Chinese ceramics or Greece/Mediterranean/Provence.

In Greek tradition, they would go with white washed rough plaster, or with terra cotta or ochre. Its a nice clean-earthy conrast.

The Chinese would add some Chinese red or jade green.

A pale yellow would be the southern French tradition. Perhaps be that the shade already painted is overpowering, but a far lighter, and less pure tint would work.

If you were a decendant of the Mayflower with a summer home on Nantucket, you could make it a nautical red, white and blue. Please don't.

Verralux was a European manufacturer. The style remind me of the 1920s and early 30s modern furniture that was common in Israel, in the homes of pre-war German refugees. Quite Bauhaus.
I would guess that it was for umbrellas, outdoor shoes, slippers and gloves. (People often removed their shoes in homes.)
How unusual to find such a piece in the US!

One thing that I HATE about new American homes, is the lack of ceiling lights. For some idiotic reason builders of new apartments seem to think that the peeing is the only activity that light is needed for. Does it add any "ambience"? No! Unless one likes the "modern" look of trails of electric cords.
