This home is really not my taste, but I do acknowledge how much thought has gone into the design process. I also like the advice to decorate for yourself, no matter what other people say, so I hope the owner doesn't care what I said about it. ;)

Apart from that it was interesting to see how well the bright green (which I really like!) works as an accent color throughout the home.

I always thought that their furniture fits perfectly into cheaply built McMansions. Bulky and grotesquely ugly. So I'm glad to see that this wasn't just my European perspective.

Love the crates and the colors, but I'd never put all those shoes in plain sight. It looks cluttered.

I live in Germany, do have a dryer, but also line dry. E.g. heavy towls or bath mats are in the dryer for ca. 10 minutes to soften and shed the cat's hair, then I hang them on a rack. I take a lot of clothes out of the dryer after 15 minutes when they are wrinkle free and put them on hangers or on the rack in front of an open window.

We lived in the countryside since 1988 where you can't walk anywhere. So I'm thrilled to move back to a big city where we'll have

1. three grocery stores
2. a pharmacy
3. a bakery
4. a pizzeria
5. an ice cream parlor (smile)
6. a dry cleaner
7. a weekly farmers market
8. public transportation galore

within 500 meters. Plus a fantastic shopping center within 2 kilometers, accessible through a park.

I really love to walk (not as an extra "workout" but as a part of everyday life) and can hardly wait to move.

One of the reasons for big homes in prime locations like (oceanfront) Hilton Head Island is that the lots are simply too expensive to build something small or to keep the smaller home that was built there forty years ago.

The front is too busy for me with all the different materials, but the rest of the house is beautiful. Love the atrium. It is so nice to have a real private outdoor place in the city.

The Case Against the Guest Bedroom

I never understood the appeal of a large bedroom. It's like sleeping in a ballroom. Our main bedroom is ca 10'x13' and that's large enough. One whole side is floor to ceiling windows, though, which prevents it from feeling cramped.

I don't need a dark room to sleep and love a lot of light, not only in the morning, so I look forward to our next house where my bedroom faces east. The only thing that keeps me from sleeping under a skylight is the noise of rain.

Too low is just as ridiculous as too high. I don't want a bed I need to jump on (like the ones often found in the U.S.), and I don't want one which is hard to get out of. It's just that simple: consider human scale.

I think there's something fundamentally wrong with these "trends", and it is offensive (if noth bull$hit) to say that minimalists don't know how to live.

I understand that fashion or design magazines have to proclaim new trends every year, but that doesn't influence my taste much. And aren't taste and personal preferences what "makes" a home? Sure, I may find some inspiring things or colors and incoporate them into my design, but I'll not buy into Maximalism just because Elle Decor wants me to. I'm grown up, after all.

Light doesn't disturb me at all. We have transluscent blinds and I could even sleep with the lights on. But noise drives me crazy.

I drink a lot of water and have to go to the bathroom at least twice every night. What's important: keep your brain switched off. Just head to the loo and back to bed.

But one thing really makes all the difference to me: open windows. I sleep like a baby with at least one partly open window. When it's too cold (freezing) to open a window, it is as if I can't breathe and I'll get a headache.

Hard (HARD!) mattress and a firm pillow that supports the head also help. Me.

Sounds funny? Well, I think we are all very different. :)

10 Sleep Tips

It doesn't get that cold in our well insulated house, although we have large windows throughout and the heat is being turned down during the night. So I sleep under the same thin cotton filled comforter all year. But I put a soft and very warm blanket on top of it during the winter months and wear a large soft fleece shirt with long sleeves and a high collar so that the neck and the shoulders stay warm. I agree with many commenters that socks really help, too. And a cuddly cat. :)

I never did that. But just today, reading the NYT article online, I thought about the home we are remodelling right now and how different and strikingly modern it will be once we're finished. At the start of the project I considered to have the previous owner, an elderly lady, over to see what her former home has become, but I think it would break her heart. Sometimes it's just better to leave the past behind.

The stenceling is nice. The three little pieces look ridiculous. I like the BEFORE best.

I like the interior more now, the wood floors are nice, but the kitchen is just a bit too much wood on top of it. I actually like the exterior much more before. It was overgrown, that's right, but it's not too difficult to cut back some large bushes. The fence is terrible imo with a slight chance for improvement while it grays.
