@embryoconcepts, some of what you want to do will be regulated by the municipal and state/province building codes. For example, structural changes will often require the oversight and signature of a licensed Architect or Structural Engineer and the approval of your local code official in the form of a demolition/building permit.

I highly recommend talking to an architect to decide if the project you'd like to do will need an architect. An architect is trained and licensed in order to look at building projects holistically, and can speak to scope, budgets, aesthetics, schedules, logistics, and legal requirements. Check out your local chapter of the American Institute of Architects for additional tips!

Another thing to be aware of - most people in the residential construction industry in the United States are very hungry for work - now is a great time for renovations to your home.

I'm using my Diva Cup right now! I bought it three years ago and will never look back. It saves scads of money at the grocery store, there's nothing to throw away, and you can't beat the convenience.

My knitting group recommended the Diva Cup to me about a year ago, and I couldn't be happier. We're all ridiculously enthusiastic about our cups in my knitting group. :)

My mother makes a fantastic Chicken Marbella (from the Silver Palette Cookbook - link to recipe here) - throw everything into the marinade, marinate overnight, and then bake for an hour. Easy!

She likes to make a wild rice side dish with this, with golden raisins and green onions and walnuts - something fresh and springy.

Since she usually makes this for Passover, the rice is a rarity in my house, and most of the other side dishes are pretty heavy on the eggs.

At the very least, you could serve just a simple platter of fruit for dessert. Easy and parve to boot!

Good luck!

My fridge happens to be fairly short as refrigerators go (probably about 5' 4" since I can see the dust collect on top) so when I'm cooking from an online recipe, the laptop sits up there, WAY out of the way.

If the recipe is worth keeping, I'll print it out and make notes on the hard copy.

I've been using mine for a little laptop desk - the little flip-up leaves are great for peripherals I don't use all the time, or when I need a writing surface. (just have to figure out a nicer wire control)

The map I love best has got to be the Nolli Map of Rome. It was originally drafted in the series of sheets, and you can get a slightly smaller version of it here. I dream of having a big enough apartment for this baby.

GAZPACHO. mmmm, I can't get enough of the stuff. I've got tomatoes on my counter now, waiting for me to go get cilantro and tomato juice.

During the drought back in the late 80s, I recall our neighbor parking his truck on his lawn and washing the car there with plain soap and water - seemed to do the trick and kept the grass a little happier.

I have the same battery charger pictured (faceplates and all - what were they thinking?) and it DOES charge AAA batteries. There's a little flip-down device in the charging area that accommodates the smaller size.

I've been trying to figure out how to conceal my own horribly depressing fluorescent fixture in my kitchen, and I think I've got something that might work for you:

Could you hang a stretched canvas (of some more-or-less translucent fabric/paper/etc. ) from the ceiling just below the light? I bet linen or a heavy watercolor paper could look really gorgeous, or even a painted canvas, if the paint is sufficiently thin.

(I feel like this was on thekitchn.com or someplace on AT in the past couple of weeks...)

I feel like I should be able to craft something snappy and slightly gross about the need for apartments to "eliminate," in much the same way that I want to snark on all the probiotic foods that say everything about "losing weight" and "feeling regular" and never once mention pooping. Don't buy up junk you don't need - your apartment will get constipated!

It's time for some apartment fiber!

we had to make rules at my parents' house NOT to read at the table if we were having a family dinner - my mom and I would cheerfully sit and eat at the same table with our noses in our respective books, ignoring each other, but it drives my father and sister crazy.

sometimes, if I'm feeling adventurous, I'll use my water glass to prop open a larger book and move the glass as I get to the covered text, but usually I manage to eat one-handed.

things eaten with chopsticks (apart from noodles) I think are the easiest to eat while reading.

looks like it could really pop with some natural decorations, like big clusters of branches or dried seed pods, perhaps painted in bright bold colors like those in the poppy artwork.

I'd be tempted to just drape branches across the mantel like a garland-y thing, with maybe some tall hefty candlesticks and tapers on one side.

this seems perfect for an old-fashioned sleeping porch. rocking daybed with lemonade in the afternoon, and a breezy hammock-y bed at night. maybe you could even sleep on it sideways, so the swaying motion would be more like a hammock and less sea-sickness-inducing.

Ahh, I love whiteprints. And how is it that every architecture firm that ever hand-drew things decided on the same lettering style? I swear I practiced those very letterforms over and over at my parallel bar at my old office.

Does anybody still do the old UV exposure and ammonia fume construction document sets?

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Since I'm still working my way up to the major weights, I think a bench sturdy enough to hold sitting people will do the trick. And like Dave suggests, if I progress beyond the smaller weights, I can always join a gym.

The bookcase idea is an interesting one - I'll keep it in mind!

Now I just need to figure out how to play DDR in the morning without bothering the downstairs neighbors...
