I am married to a type 2 diabetic. When we found out it really changed the way we ate. I used to bake a lot but I hardly ever do that now. We decided that we'd rather eat baked good sporadically but the real thing than to eat fake, processed, chemical food.
When I do bake I try to use less sugar or I bake for an occasion and we give most of the food away, so I are not left with two dozen chocolate chip cookies.

I also cut way down on the carb servings. A few times a week we skip the carbs completely and otherwise we mostly eat whole-grains. We also eat a high-fiber diet with lots of lentils and beans. Doctors told us that this is a great diet to follow anyway.

The most surprising thing for us was to find out how much sugar is in dairy. My husband switched to unsweetened soy milk, which I don't think is the best choice since it's supposed to increase estrogen levels but it did help to get his blood sugar down.

Happened to me too, also with Lodge. The washing instructions actually say to NOT let is soak, I thought that had been my mistake. This has not happened with my Le Creuset which I use the exact same way, so it might be an issue with Lodge in general.

Don't hang paintings over your baby's bed - they can fall and seriously hurt your kid. Shattered glass in the crib is no fun. We have a wall decal, it might not look as stylish but it's a lot safer.

Also, half of these places will be taken apart as soon as the kids are able to walk. Or maybe my toddler is just especially interested in taking things apart ...

I wonder if this was the same restaurant that Louisa Weiss (Wednesday Chef) went to in her book My Berlin Kitchen. It sounds so similar! I made her recipe for Brussels sprouts from the book which is similar and it was amazing.

As a kid, I wasn't too fond of cheese. But that was because I didn't like the mild cheeses that we have in Austria. When I moved to Holland I discovered the world of aged Goudas and stinky French cheeses and now cheese is my favorite food in the world. With my 18 month old, I give her whatever we have and I found like myself, she prefers strong tasting cheeses over mild cheddars. Her favorite cheeses are Cotswold, Feta cheese and surprisingly - Jasper Hills Harbinger. She is CRAZY about the Harbinger, especially with some honey on it.

A few years ago I had to have a lot of oral surgery. The first one got infected and had to be redone so I talked to my surgeon and he told me to eat lots of high vitamin C fruits. I know it's said here already.
Anyway, I ate tons of tomatoes, lots of garlic and potatoes. I healed very fast with the next surgery and didn't have any more problems.

My standard chili is a three bean chili with bacon (no other meat), fire roasted corn, onions and roasted peppers (TJs sells these frozen which makes it a lot easier). If I make it for a crowd or if I have a meat craving I add chorizo sausage (not the dried one) and chipotle in adobo sauce. I am going to give coffee and cocoa a try though!

I bought our Thanksgiving turkey (heritage) from Guilt Taste. I buy my Maldon salt from Amazon and once or twice a year I make a large order at Austriangrocery.com for Austrian food I miss and can't get here (Styrian pumpkin seed oil! Austrian bread mixes for the bread machine ...).

I have the standard Kosher, celery, spiced salts and garlic salt and then I have a few fancier ones like grey Fleur de Sel, Greek sea salt, black truffle salt, smoked Maldon salt, Himalayan pink salt, "Real salt" and some smoked Spanish, pyramid salt.

The only ones I use most of the time are the Maldon as a finishing salt, the black truffle salt, the Greek sea salt and the Kosher salt.
I LOVE the smoked Maldon and order it on Amazon.com in packages of 6.

I also used the Fresh Baby ice cube trays. They state that you shouldn't wash them in the dishwasher as the tops warp. I haven't washed them in the dishwasher and I had no problems with the lids coming off.

As for why people use these expensive baby food storage containers instead of ice cube trays - BPA. The Fresh Baby (and I am sure all of these other containers which were bought recently) are BPA free.

I use one big Ziploc bag for about 40 servings of food, so I don't feel too bad about that. I don't have the money and freezer storage to put everything in glass containers, at least now that my child is only 6 months old and only eats 1 or 2oz at a time. Maybe that's something to consider for the future. The cookie/cupcake sheets are a good idea but I am not sure I can fit them in my freezer.

As people have said - the risk of crib bumpers is not just from rolling against it, it's also strangulation - even when properly used.

I used to work in quality control for a kids clothing manufacturer and you wouldn't believe all the rules there are for kids clothes today - for example, no strings above the navel for infant clothing, no pockets, ... and you know why these rules exist? Because kids have died.

The same goes for crib bumpers. When people say "Well, I used crib bumpers with all of my four children and they are still alive." - congratulations. A 1% risk of a kid dying might not seem like a very high risk but that doesn't mean that it can't be your kid.
Why risk something when you don't have to risk it?

My baby is very, very active and used to get stuck in the crib slats as well but she learned and now she doesn't do it anymore. Yes, she occasionally hits her head but that's ok, it's normal and I know it will happen much more once she learns to walk. I am going to try and make her environment as safe as possible. But adding something that could possibly kill her doesn't make sense to me.

Please remember, infants are not like grown ups - they can get tangled in all kinds of stuff and you would never know how they got there. You might not be able to imagine how you could get tangled up in a safely secured (breathable) bumper but obviously it happens. Crib bedding, including bumpers is a very lucrative business so I don't think they'd throw out warnings against them if there wasn't a base to them.

I agree with Alisa - please consider donating first. Either to NICU babies or to a milk bank. I too have had supply issues myself and have done everything (and still doing everything) to get my supply up. A friend of mine gave me 200oz of her freezer stash and for the last two weeks my baby has been receiving breast milk exclusively and the difference is amazing. Her digestion is so much better, her skin cleared up (no more baby acne), she is happier, ...
I know if I can't manage to get my supply up enough in the next two weeks I will have to go back to giving her some formula and it breaks my heart. So please, please, please if you are able to donate some to babies in need, please do.

I actually grew up right next to Wagram and close to the Wachau area of Lower Austria but I am more of a fan of the dry, white Italian whites.

However, I didn't even know about the three different kinds of Grüner Veltliner (what a bad, Austrian foodie I am). I also noticed that more varieties of Austrian wines are now available at our local Wholefoods. I'll have to give them all a try this summer.

As some other poster said before I successfully planted spring onions from the little root scraps that I had left over. I did the same with leeks. They grow thinner than what you get in the store though.
My mom gave me seeds from an heirloom tomato brand called White Beauty once and I grew amazing tomato plants from them, better than any bought tomato plants that I had.

Amazing Meal - chocolate flavor works really well. It tastes different than normal protein powder (more earthy) but once you get used to the flavor it's not bad and much healthier than protein powders.

I have seen the Kinder eggs in Polish markets in Chicago as well (Fresh Farms in Niles has them) but they are not the same as what I grew up with in Austria. The best thing about the Ueberraschungseier was the special collections like the Crazy Crocos - google it. They are still collector items. There would be one in every 7th egg or something like that and we swapped them in school.

I can't believe American kids have to grow up without Kinder Eggs, they were such an essential part of my childhood.

I also really miss Kinder Milchschnitte, Kinder Maxi King and Kinder Pingui.

I recommend the cook book "Love Soup" - there are actually whole menu suggestions in there - with recipes on how to bake the bread, make the salad and even dessert to go with each soup.
It's a vegetarian soup recipe book but sometimes I add meat to the recipes to make them more hearty.
