There are a few Australian cake and biscuit (cookie) recipes which use custard powder. Try the following websites for some ideas: http://www.taste.com.au/

http://aww.ninemsn.com.au/food/ - the Australian Women's Weekly recipes are an institution. Try a search for Melting Moments, my particular favourite. It's a shortbread-type biscuit sandwiched together with icing. Yummo! and delicious with tea or coffee.

I have the Zojirushi lunch jar pictured above. The portion sizes are generous (for a woman) and the food is usually warm enough to eat at lunch without having to reheat it (5-6 hours later). As for the food itself, I put in the containers whatever I have leftover from dinner the night before: roast dinner - meat in one, vegetables in another container; stews; casseroles; curries, etc. So don't feel restricted to soup.

I make Kugelhopf every Christmas, for friends and to bring into work, and I've been given the thumbs up by a German acquaintance. Strangely enough, I can't make a Stollen to save my life. You could build a house with the ones I make!

One of the best things of living here in the Middle East is being introduced to "new"spices such as loomi and sumak. Even better is going shopping for them. No packets on a supermarket shelf for me; I head to the local souk and the aroma of all those spices is intoxicating, not to mention, inspiring. I come home and head straight to the kitchen to cook enough food to feed an Arabic wedding guest list i.e. hundreds!

Oh, I quite agree with you. I like to read at night before I go to sleep and, more often than not, it will be a cookbook. I particularly enjoyed reading The Kitchen Diaries, and as you wrote, Nigel Slater is inspirational. I often want to leap out of bed and start cooking then and there! Cookbooks are my passion and I'm fortunate to earn enough money to indulge it, and even if I didn't, well, I'd find the money somewhere! When people comment on the number of books (and I have a LOT), I reply that they have their hobbies and this is mine. I'll often pull up a chair in front of the bookcase and take a book off the shelf to read. More often than not, I am compelled to head to the kitchen to cook something.

I'm Australian and Golden Syrup is as popular in Australia as it is in the UK. I adore Golden Syrup slathered over toasty hot crumpets - I'm salivating at the thought! But how about making Australia's favourite biscuit (cookie): Anzacs. This is perhaps the first thing that Australian children learn to make in the kitchen, and is popular with all ages.

I'm used to the Metric system and I have to say that the American tendency of measuring, for example, butter by tablespoons so infuriating! I come across an interesting recipe and as soon as I see tablespoons/cups/etcetera, well, it's enough to make me switch off. I am puzzled, though: why? Scales are more accurate, whether one is used to the Imperial or the Metric sysytems.

I'd throw everything in the dishwasher or the washing machine if I could get away with it! But I have to say that the best product to use in the kitchen is good old Bicarbonate of Soda (Baking Soda). It cuts through all the grime on the inside of the microwave; cleans the inside of my breadmaker without scratching in it; polishes my sink and leaves my stove top like new.

I thought I was in a minority! It's nice to know that there are other people out there who still write the old-fashioned way, with pen and paper. Like SunnyBlue, I use a fountain pen and some gorgeous monogrammed note cards and paper, (a Christmas gift from a thoughtful sister). Those things make writing a pleasurable "chore".
