Notes from a Little Greek Island

My daughter just got back from New Orleans - an alternative spring break where they built houses down the areas still not recovered from Hurricane Katrina... so she has requested some Gumbo! Never made it before so we shall see how that turns out!

What's Cooking This Weekend? Weekend of March 23-24, 2013

We, as a family, have opted to spend less to spend on gifts and instead we save up and get a "holiday house". We rent a small place (within a few hours drive) for a few days and get away as a family. My husband, who works really long hours at a stressful jobs, then gets to spend real quality time with all the kids. We bring board games, legos, cards... Instead of exchanging gifts with all our friends and extended family - the house is open for some eat, drink and be merry time. It is a really nice time that we all have come to look forward to. As for gifts, the kids get a few NEED items and one WANT item from Santa.

We have started doing the same for brithdays too - instead of gifts - the kids can pick a "fun day". Like sliding and a winter picnic, or a day at the river for swimming.

I love the winter stew ideas you had. A big warm hug of a meal on such a special day. I have done some large parties before and found that large amounts of great roasted veggies (mushrooms, potatoes, root veg, brussel sprouts, garlic etc) are great at room temperature. Toss in fresh herbs, or serve with a herb vinegarette on the side would be great. Could do a version with sausage too for meat eaters.

We are due any minute now, and also battle with stuff. People are very kind and have offered many items to us, but we opted to go for a less is more approach. With my son we had the swings, seats, pack n plays etc and never used them. So this time we opted to go without. The only big splurge purchase was a high end stroller that goes from infant to 50 lbs.

Being from the UK I wanted to bring a little touch of this into my sons room. I bought a large tapestry of the Union Jack and made it into four window panels. So when closed it makes the flag around his room, when open it just adds pops of colour to his space. I am trying to work up some ideas for my daughters (born any moment now) room now with the same UK whimsy.

My family and I are actually talking relocating for this very reason. Living in the North East means not a lot of outdoor living time. Plenty to do all seasons up here, but too cold to have this type of living space. To have a space like this would be heaven!!!!

For my son's birthday I made a huge fruit salad with star fruit, melon, berries etc (no sugar just some mint & fresh orange juice to dress) and served them in ice cream cones. The kids enjoyed the fun aspect and trying new fruits some of them had never had before!

This post inspired me to purchase some new bedding! We have been renovating, and the master is the last one to get dressed up. Now, I just need a cool headboard and some art!

We have been saving up wine corks for a very long time (or we just drink a ton of wine) - anyway, I made a cork wreath for our dining room to make it feel festive! I have been thinking of something for the front door - so thanks for the ideas!

Please bring me one new Le Creuset pan in Aubergine this year for Christmas. I have been a very good girl.

Ginger, Lemon, Apple, Pear - all these add a nice touch of flavor to balance out the "garden" tsate of juiced veggies. Sometime I turn green juices into smoothies to - bringing in the blender & adding banana or avacado etc.

We recently bought a juicer and have enjoyed the benefits of it alot. My husband went on a juice fast for 30 days and lost 25lbs! I love to eat too much, but still continue to add green drinks into my diet for health. They are bulky and take up some room, but worth it!

We did this in our living room layers white twin sheets (which were inexpensive) with some gorgeous fabric roman shades.... I think it works great!

We have a 1920's foursquare as well - we opted to paint and are happy with the results. Our wood too wasn't in great shape - we did manage to save the wood floors though! Good luck!

WOW. Where can I sign up to have that job? That would be my dream job... talking about food all day! I "food coach" now some friends and coworkers (teaching them to cook, and eat healthy on a budget) but that would be awesome!
