Log. I just had to comment and leave my own loggy stories... I have definitely slept through dorm fire alarms (alarm in my room), crazy thunderstorms, someone lighting off a firecracker underneath my aparment window, but what takes the cake for me was a story like dustinstruckmeyer... I lived above a cupcake shop with a very large, single sheet plate glass front window, and one night someone(s) decided to throw a huge log through it. There was a big "boom" and shaking in my dream, but I didn't wake up until my roommate came into my room to get me.

virtualjess - I would guess so; for christmas this year I made Ginger Molasses sponge toffee and it was awesome! The site with the recipe seems to be down now, but iirc it used molasses as the primary syrup.

I immediately thought of the blog Jaws Wired Shut, which was written by a girl who had her jaw wired shut (obviously), and had to be on a liquid diet that she could drink through a straw. She tried a lot of things, and there might be some ideas on there.

If you temper your (pure, preferably high-cocoa-percentage) chocolate properly, it should set up smooth, glossy, with a good snap and won't melt immediately when you touch it. It can be kind of tricky, but Cooking for Engineers has pretty good instructions here: http://www.cookingforengineers.com/article/155/Tempering-Chocolate

I successfully did it this year for my candies, and it turned out great. No parafin needed!

In re: VioletVeil, I've had my Wolfgang Puck stainless huge saute pan for 5 years now, and it's been nothing but awesome. I haven't had any issues with corroding. I didn't get a set, but only a single pan of the series with the hollow, round handle (like this), not the solid handle, which seems to be the more common, at least online.

If you drop your MacBook and break the screen (or other things), Apple has a flat, fix everything fee of $1200. Even if all you need is a screen, which shouldn't be that much, it's $1200.

If you want an Apple authorized technician (say, if you're like me and have AppleCare and don't want to void it), I highly recommend MyService (http://www.myservice.com/). They were super helpful and had a very quick turnaround time (they fix the computer within 24 hours of getting it as long as they don't have to wait for a special part). It cost me $400 to get a new screen for my MBP, and they actually caught that my optical drive was failing on the exit diagnosis and fixed it under my AppleCare while they had it.

People look at me funny when I do this, but I've been doing it for years. It's funny to see it come up on the Kitchn! It's a favorite of mine in the morning when I need a little caffeine (I almost never drink caffeine, so a little goes a long way). I make up a cup of hot chocolate then let my tea bag (usually black tea like Earl Grey or English Breakfast) steep in it for a while. I usually end up doing it at conferences and at places like hotels, where they'll have tea and hot chocolate mix set out with the included breakfast.

I find that letting my pot soak with just warm water in the sink works beautifully for getting caramel off the sides. My boyfriend didn't believe me, but if you let it soak for a good long while, it just comes right off!

We don't keep a lot of random food around the house, so there's not a lot of "hmm, what can I make with this?" that goes on. I have a bookmark folder full of recipes and a bunch of cookbooks, and I look through those, find a recipe, buy the ingredients for that, and then cook it. Because there's only two of us and usually recipes feed 4-6, we get 2-3 nights out of one dish (and we don't see anything wrong with eating the same thing twice in a row). We end up going shopping every 2-3 three days, but we rarely buy anything not on the list, so we don't have any budget problems. Almost everything in the kitchen has a meal it's designated to go in, so there's never anything to "use up before it goes bad." I like cooking complex meals, so throwing stuff together rarely happens with me; even meals that I don't use a recipe for have a lot of research that goes into them.

I'm like BrooklynBaker... I go to the grocery to pick up what I need for meals before I make them, but a lot of times I already have ingredients at home, so you get a big mishmash. Also, my boyfriend and I split the groceries into two baskets, so any coherancy there might have been is usually destroyed.

When I have only a few things I'm always amused by what other shoppers must think of me, like the milk and condoms run I once made.

I'm pretty sure you can get small, non-commercial snow cone makers that work fine. I had a small snow cone maker as a kid, and it worked great. I don't remember anything about the brand, but it was a personal snow cone maker; it might have been hand powered (with a crank), but hey, it's greener that way, right? Anyway, I used to make snow cones during the summer and sell them to the people who came to take horseback riding lessons on our farm.

I don't like mushrooms, but I'm totally cool with that. A lot of times I'll eat them mixed into a sauce if I don't think about it, but I don't really feel like I'm missing anything by not liking them.

Everything I used to not like (raw tomatoes, eggplant, beans), I got over a few years ago while living in Greece. I used to not eat sushi either, but tried slowly got into it a couple of years ago and I love love love it now. So I've gotten over most of my dislikes that I had for a while even as an adult. There are still a few things I don't like, but nothing I really wished I did.

Um, what? You're comparing nonnative exotic snakes like boas and pythons that have escaped or been released, which, as d4kk1tt3 mentions, are not likely to be a threat to humans, and NATIVE snakes that have been living in the region for longer than humans have been here. NATIVE. Their presence is natural and expected. Yes, copperheads are venomous (not poisonous; things that you eat that hurt you are poisonous, things that bite you or sting you that hurt you are venomous); so? They only deadly in very rare situations. Many venomous snakes are attracted to areas with humans because of the rats and vermin humans and their trash also attract, so it shouldn't be too surprising to see them around us.

The Benaki Museum is an often overlooked museum in a neat old mansion in downtown Athens, and it has a ton of cool art and artifacts. Worth a trip, definitely. Also wander around the national gardens, which are beautiful in the spring.

I'm partial to the Splendid Table's Chicken Bog, which in turn comes from A Love Affair with Southern Cooking by Jean Anderson. I like it because everything cooks in one pot, including the rice.

I hate generalizations.

Just because I'm young doesn't make me wasteful, materialistic and demanding of instant gratification. Just because I shop at Ikea doesn't make me these things either. Just because the furniture is inexpensive doesn't mean it won't last. Just because you bought a used piece of solid wood furniture on craigslist doesn't mean it's better than something you could buy at Ikea (I'd rather buy a piece of furniture from Ikea that is PERFECT for my purposes than something from craigslist that is not).

Also, I really want that skirt.

Current inventory... a package of TJ's trek mix granola bars, two bags of Argo Maté Tea, a jar of Spice House Chai Mix, a box of mixed varieties of sugar cubes from Mauritius, a bag of cacao nibs ginger nibs from the Spice House, a bag of dried persimmons, a bag of freeze dried mangosteen, four different TJ's indian fare meals, and a bag of hoarded Cadbury Mini Eggs from Easter, plus napkins and tea filters. I also have a can of "Christmas in a Cup" black tea and a bottle of TJ's mesquite desert honey on my desk, as they don't fit in the drawer.

My lab has a fridge (in which I currently have plain yogurt and fresh berries), plus plates and silverware, so that's all in a common area. I keep my own glass on my desk.

Nice. I was just lamenting that I hated getting phone books, so hopefully I'll be able to opt out of delivery. And I just started getting those factory warrenty robocalls... don't know if the do not call list will work, but here's hoping!
