I'd be lost without menu planning. I *hate* grocery shopping, so to go more than once a week is painful. I menu plan once a week, using a combination of my husband's suggestions and a set of index cards with meals and ingredients (no recipes) listed on them if we get stuck for inspiration. I try to schedule our meals so the same side can be used two nights in a row, or leftovers from one meal are incorporated in the next night's. If I'm feeling ambitious, I plan one or two bulk freezer meals to make on a weekend.
I drew a little menu planner to help with spaces for each day on one side and a grocery list down the other -- it's available for free download here if anyone wants it:

you can definitely just slip a duvet cover on a comforter instead of a duvet. if you find it doesn't fit properly, you can either sew snaps or ribbons in it as inspiredmomma suggested, or buy little duvet clips at most home stores. they're covered in soft foam and clip the corners of the comforter/duvet inside the corner.

i also use duvet covers for my grownup bedding -- nice easy way to change the look every now and then!

for those of you in austin interested in vintage furniture, uptown modern is a great place to find high-quality mid-century pieces at a reasonable price (they're not cheap, but they're reasonable for what you get). we got a lovely piece for our living room there several months ago, and wish we still lived in texas so we could check out their inventory for our nursery! the owner is very helpful and friendly, too. http://www.uptownmodernaustin.com/

i never pat my chicken dry, either -- why bother? and if you must use something for bacon or other fried foods, layer newspaper from your recycling bin and place one paper towel or napkin on top to keep the ink off your food (i never buy paper napkins, but always have 5-10 in my takeout drawer from takeout).
i haven't used paper towels or napkins in 6 or 7 years.
