Nice, but pricey. Here's a cute one from P'Kolino that costs less than a third that much...

We were not officially trying yet, though we had been talking about it for ages and were in the final stages of "getting ready to start trying" (He was dying for a baby even before we got married but I'd kept him waiting for several years while I finished grad school and launched my career).

When I took the test, my musician husband was still on tour in Germany, scheduled to fly home in 2 more days. I was bursting with the news since since I couldn't tell my husband yet, I really couldn't talk to anyone about it.

Several months earlier, I'd found a cute short haircut in a magazine and told him, "that's how I'll cut my hair when I get pregnant." So to pass the time, I went in and had my long hair hacked off. When he called from Europe the last time, I told him I had some "surprises" for him but said no more. I knew I had to wait and tell him in person--I wanted to see the look on his face, wanted to be able to kiss and hug and freak out together, and if I had told him on the phone, he would have gone *insane* on the 18 hour journey home.

When he finally got through customs and emerged into the waiting area, we kissed and hugged--we hadn't seen each other in six weeks. I whispered, "did you figure out the surprise?" His eyes widened in amazement and disbelief and he pointed at my stomach. I nodded and he nearly fainted.

I wouldn't wait too long purely in the interest of engineering an elaborate set-up; I think the news itself is drama enough without going to great lengths to set the scene, and of course he deserves to know ASAP. But I would favor telling him in person rather than, say calling him at work... I think it's really nice to be together to share the moment, with the time and space to process it and talk about it together. It's a moment you'll both probably never forget.

Congratulations!

Apartment Therapy - Good Questions: Where were you when you told them you were expecting?

Will maternity stuff be carried? If so, I highly recommend their maternity clothes to expectant moms (provided you can wear Japanese sizes, as there are only two: SM or ML, I wear the later and was a 2 pre-pregnancy). I ordered two pairs of AWESOME maternity pants from the muji website early on in pregnancy--had them sent to a friend in Japan and she shipped them to me--and they are the cornerstone of my pregnancy wardrobe. Unlike American maternity pants, they have this ingenious adjustable elastic waistband so I could wear them at 20 weeks and they still fit comfortably now at 34. They are also way cheaper than stuff of comparable quality in the US (even after you pay for intl shipping!). My friend also sent the cutest selection of muji toys you can imagine and the stripy pajamas mentioned above--which not only fasten together as described, but employ a number of very clever design features that help teach your toddler to put them on herself (large buttons and buttonholes in alternating colors so that it's easy to see which button corresponds to each hole, an ornamental pocket on the pants so it's easy to tell front from back, etc).

The muji online store is a bit confusing if you don't read Japanese but here's a PDF catalog of kid and maternity stuff to ogle. At least you'll know what to request next time a friend goes to Japan and asks what to bring back.

Safe Paint:

I've been considering milk paint, which comes in gorgeous colors. I read about it in an ivillage newsletter:

"The Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company uses a paint formula that dates back to the 19th century, when homemade paint was stirred up using a recipe of buttermilk and crushed limestone. The company's new line, SafePaint, is specially formulated for walls and other nonporous surfaces. Made from food- and pharmaceutical-grade ingredients, it contains no synthetic petroleum or plastics, it's biodegradable, and it will not give off VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)."

I'm just about to do a square Flor rug in Toy Poodle, too.

As far as the tile-look versus seamless rug look issue goes, my impression is that it depends on the Flor line you order. Some are meant to look seamless, but the ones with beveled edges will look more tiled.

In case this hasn't reached you, FLOR is running a 15% off promotion until Aug 3rd. The code to input is P077H15W.

Does anyone have tips regarding putting together a baby registry? One challenge I've run into is that many of the sites that seem to have cute, well-designed gear have a limited selection, necessitating registry and multiple sites if one chooses to go that route. In the interest of having just one registry, I decided to use Amazon, but am daunted by the sheer volume of products there are to wade through. Where to start? Are there certain vendors people recommend so that I can narrow the search? Any must-have product recommendations?

I want it.

The cradle looks kind of precarious, though...

Any suggestions for comparable products that are available for purchase? Most of the co-sleepers I've seen so far are awfully froofy.
