Why no love for Target? They've had organic sheets in this price range for years.

Target has had organic cotton sheets for years:

Anyone who travels between New York and Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore or DC and hasn't tried BoltBus, you're missing something good. The company is a subsidiary of Greyhound, the buses have wifi, plugs, extra legroom and nice seats (as above), and the prices top out at about $25 each way. Is it as comfortable as the train? Not quite. Still, there is a nice camaraderie that has developed on BoltBus which I never noticed when I still took Greyhound. Eco-friendly? That's just icing on the cake.

I would add The Accidental Wine Company:

http://www.accidentalwine.com/

From their website:

A bottle breaks and stains its neighbors, a new label design replaces an old established one, or a winery just closes its doors. A soiled, retired, or discontinued label is suddenly and simply less valuable.

Ah, but the contents remain perfect. Whether it is ruby or straw colored, it still has its legs, and its fruit and perfume. The character and charm remain in tact and by golly, it still commands passion and presence. And, wow, what wonderful taste.

>

They send me three bottles a month at a decent price point, and I have never been disappointed. I don't mind the occasional stained label, and I feel that I can "punch above my weight", as it were. Plus, awesome customer service.

In number 1 you suggest that the best thing to do is recycle them. Might I suggest that better than recycling is to re-use them for their intended purpose? I keep a small bag in my closet for shipping.

At 6'2", I'm tall but not NBA tall. More often than not, when I get in my seat and I'm sitting up straight, my knees are already up against the seat in front of me, even before the person in front of my has decided she just _has_ to recline, just to stake out territory. Even worse, the thick wire in the seat pocket always seems to hit me right in the knee cap, and rarely do I get off the plane without some small bruises.

For all those, yes, hippies out there who say "we just need to start talking with strangers": nine times out of ten when I take this approach, I get snarled at. And parents with children are even worse about this. If you suggest, politely, that maybe 10-year old Timmy, whose feet don't even reach the floor, doesn't need to recline the seat to be comfortable, especially as he is doing damage to my knees, you would think I had suggested throwing him off the plane.

So, yes, knee defenders are a solution I can get behind. It's every man for himself back in coach. Technology to the rescue.

One potentially "green" fur: using fur from a possum in New Zealand. The critters came over from Australia, but in New Zealand they have no natural predators and have therefore devastated the local bird populations. For more info, read

and

So the fur is still from a living creature, but one that is harming the local environment. Does that make people feel OK with using it?

I, too, had tried this recipe and was disappointed. I'm not letting it get me down, though, as there are still plenty of recipes out there to try. You can't win 'em all.

The Fair Trade label is only available to a small subset of growers, those in co-ops, and is not available to larger land owners, no matter how much they pay their workers, so it does nothing to encourage a better living for the vast majority of farm workers. The conditions on organic farms tend to be better than average, and the Rainforest Alliance does a great job of vetting the growers who get their label.

My Zeroll scoop has developed issues with its finish (the metal seems to be oxidizing or something), so a new scoop is on my list of things to get.

I once advertised a bunch of old t-shirts on freecycle, and I ended up giving them to someone who used them for polishing tack for police horses. Likewise, if there is a local church that has a lot of polishing needs, they would be great for this purpose.

Does anyone else have the problem with the Zeroll scoop oxidizing? I have never put it in the dishwasher, as per the instructions, but the surface has begun to deteriorate, leaving black marks on my hands, dish cloths and ice cream containers (though not the ice cream itself, thank goodness). Anyone know what's causing this or how I can reverse the process?
