I agree with this wholeheartedly. Also - those 'low costs' of furniture that is poorly made are not really that low if you consider that you will have to replace them frequently.

A $500 sofa that has to get replaced every 5 years costs $2,000 over 20 years. If you are able to afford a $1,500 sofa upfront, it should be much better made and could last the full 20 years and still look good.

I try to advise my clients to make investments on furniture pieces that get used really often (like a family room sofa), or are upholstered (there is a huge difference in upholstery quality from low to high), and spend less or look for deals on pieces that are simpler, like a bookcase, or more trendy (like a rug or pillows), which you will want to change more often.

I agree with #2 and would add NO TV. Reading is sexy. Watching TV is not.

There are tons of talented people on AT that give free advice, but sometimes you need the experienced eye, resources and knowledge of a professional.

That bed is from IKEA, though discontinued. These have a similar simplicity:

Thanks, Maxwell!

I'm very excited about the new Dwell collection - in San Francisco it's going to be carried at Aldea Home.

Yes, even the blue 'less tacky' masking tape is not supposed to be left up for more than a week or two.
Not to mention, when you've put up a design in a sunny room, the exposed wall is going to fade, leaving the outlines of your design when you remove it.

It's probably best to cover the whole wall (with fabric or tacked paper) if you plan to stay for a while.

I know people have asked before, but I'd love for you to try a McRoskey mattress from San Francisco.

They are quite expensive, but natural and handmade, and I'd like to know what you think.

Great experiment!

Hi Rosenatti-

It might be too late (just saw this post), but my company, Labexperiment provides interior design 'prescriptions' that can be put together yourself, and I meet with clients in person in the Bay Area.

I hope this helps!

Hi riverridge-

Thanks!
The bed frame was indeed from West Elm years ago - and I think they were calling it something else then. But it's definitely the chocolate color.

The duvet cover isn't white - it's natural linen color (hard to tell in the photo). That was also from West Elm. However, they now have a washed linen duvet in white that might be just what you want!

The kitchen chairs were from Design Within Reach many years ago. They don't have them anymore, and to tell you the truth, they are not super durable. Though I do love the way they look!

If I were doing it again I'd probably get chairs from Kartell, since I'm sure they'd last longer.

Hi Orouni,

The subway sign is from an antique store, but I have seen several for sale on Ebay. I'm sure you can probably find a French metro one there. Good luck!

Gabriella - sorry to disappoint you, but the numbered pillows are actually red. I got them at a modern economy sample sale.

The orange pillow in the middle is a custom-made pillow I got from my office.

I'm not sure which bookcase you mean - in the living room the cabinet is built-in. In the purple bedroom I think it is an old piece from IKEA.

Hi guys - sorry a little late on answering questions.

Shlowzi - the chairs were from DWR years ago. Don't think they have them anymore.

RoseMars - you can get the flowers online here:
http://www.casabonampak.com/gifapaflsipa.html

Lona - the green in my bedroom is Kelly Moore 'Pick of the Meadow'.

The funny thing about this is that the kitchen is really much more orange in person, but I love how it looks in the photos, too :).

thanks! - Leslie

The subway sign is from antique store - it's a fabric roller sign from a subway car. But I've seen them on Ebay.
