I'm very curious to try this out! I'd heard that Silkie chickens are some of the best out there, and I've seen them in T&T and other Asian markets before, but I've always been a bit too intimidated to actually buy one and cook it.

As for all the people who were made squeemish by this, something tells me that they were the same people offended by last week's post on beef heart. While I get that the chicken is cute, it's livestock. Some people choose to keep livestock as pets, but that doesn't change the fact that it's livestock. Our meat comes from living creatures, and as responsible carnivore-omnivores, we need to know where our food comes from and adopt a nose-to-tail attitude to eating. That means looking past the vacuum sealed boneless-skinless chicken boobs and knowing what the bird looked like and how it lived. That means sometimes you see the cute, fluffy creature your lamb chop came from.

I've had marinated, grilled beef heart (anticuchos) a number of times, and it is completely delicious. Really beefy taste! If I saw beef heart in the grocery, I'd be tempted to try making it at home :)

I won't be handing out candy myself this year (helping a friend move), but I bought the candy my co-workers and the kids I work with are handing out at the group home I work at. I got a variety of fun stuff at Bulk Barn. And let me tell you, if I'd bought anything "healthy" for our trick-or-treaters, my kids would have had my head. For them it's a matter of principle.

I work hard to get my kids at work to eat healthy the rest of the year, I think they and the other trick-or-treaters deserve a proper treat on Halloween.

I buy President's Choice Blue Label chicken and beef stock in the tetra packs. It's affordable, tasty and is low-sodium by default, but Knorr's stocks are pretty good too. I also keep Better Than Bouillon in my fridge for when I only need a little bit of broth, or if I think a soup or whatever needs a little more flavour.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! It's been a chilly Thanksgiving weekend here in Edmonton! I come from a large, blended family so I get two very different Thanksgiving dinners this weekend every year.
For dinner with my dad's family yesterday, we made deep-fried turkey, two kinds of stuffing (apple chestnut bread stuffing and oatmeal stuffing), roasted root vegetables, corn fritters, brussels sprouts with bacon and balsamic vinegar, cranberry fruit chutney and pumpkin custard for dessert!
Tonight with my mum's family, we're having roast rib of beef, cream cheese mashed potatoes, green beens, turnip puff, broccoli salad, homemade rolls, yorkshire pudding, and s'more pie for dessert!
Happy Columbus Day (is that right?) to all you lovely people south of the 49th parallel!! Everyone should get on the Canadian Thanksgiving train, I mean, any excuse to celebrate friends and family and all our blessings, right?

I can honestly say that finishing a bottle of wine has never been a problem for this solo cook ;)

That being said, when I just wanted one glass, and couldn't quite get around to the rest, I freeze the wine to use in stews and so on later.

Its' funny this is today's poll, as I've recently started compiling all my favorite recipes into a binder. My hope is that I can make copies of it, and pass it on to my future kids (i started to type "daughter," but I'd hope my sons like to cook too ;D).

It was Canada Day! We had a BBQ, and watched the fireworks in the next town over, since they're better than the one Edmonton puts on.

I grill on my BBQ, which also has a stove element, so I can prepare the whole meal. Another thing I rely on are cold rice noodle bowls, made with lots of fresh veggies and some kind of grilled protein!

I really have no huge issues with Starbucks, I like their coffee, it's better than just about all other chain coffee in Canada, and when I was finishing my undergrad, I knew that I could plunk myself down in a corner of my local sbux, and study or write a paper for HOURS, and the baristas were always cool with it. I've tried doing that in local, independent coffee places, and was often asked to leave after a couple hours. Most of the food at snuck isn't really good, so hopefully this means that they'll roll this out in Canada too, which will be nice when I need a place to study when I start Masters next fall.

I am an enormous Brito-phile (I love Scotland and Ireland just as much, if not more), and I LOVED her first book, so I'm definitely buying this.
