I agree with Jess13, paint the walls a nice light color and leave the ceiling and beams unpainted. I can only recommend this whole-heartedly because my parents did the EXACT same thing in their house in Vermont and it looks great! I also echo the sentiments of those who recommend getting rid of the green carpet. Old VT houses often have wood flooring underneath everything, and even if it is in pretty bad condition, just paint it white and use a few throw rugs and it will do wonders for the space. I am just going to echo previous remarks and say that I would do the same type of treatment (drapes, shades, etc) but would do different colors or patterns to help define each room. Great apartment! Do All Six of These Windows Need Same Treatment? Good Questions |

I have the benefit of living 5 minutes from one Ikea and 35 minutes from another. I think it may be the only area of the country where there are two so close to each other. So if something is not in stock, it's not really a hassle to go to the other one. IKEA 2013 Catalog Preview: Stylists' Design Ideas Worth Stealing |

I was browsing looking for idea's for my son's room and I love this room! And I especially love that it is in my hometown! I think we are also going to do a cityscape room, but since my husband is English I think we'll opt for a London focus....but you gave me some great ideas ;-) Ike's City Skyline My Room |

Love this place! It appears that the litter pan is next to the toilet, but I have 2 friends who have lived in tiny places and they each successfully (and rather painlessly) trained their cats to use the toilet. Kristen's Fit Everything In Small Cool Contest |

I agree with those above that say Do IT! I have plaster walls all over my house and I tear them down whenever I have the excuse. The insulation makes such a difference, and drywall is so much easier to deal with when painting, hanging things, dropping cables, etc. But if you are doing this yourself, I cannot emphasize enough to wear a heavy-duty face mask and protective clothing. The plaster dust also gets everywhere, so be sure to cover everything or hang drop cloths to protect your home. Thoughts on Replacing Plaster Wall with Insulation and Drywall? Good Questions |

So I have a teensy half-bath off of my bedroom that I have considered painting black. There is a window and I do not think light is a huge issue. However, should I still paint it if bone white tile with a black border goes up the wall about 3.5 ft? If so, do people recommend painting the window frame and ceiling black as well? I am hopeless when it comes to paint, so any advice is welcome! Darkly Chic: Black Walls in Any Room |

I second Elaine's suggestion about the primer, as well as sanding down the undercoat before re-application. Another option might be to carefully use finishing grade sandpaper to lightly buff away some of the gloss. Is it Possible to Successfully Touch Up Wall Paint? Good Questions |

I hear you about not wanting to paint the walls, since I too am a fan of really deep, dark reds. They are so moody and fun! To lighten up the place I would incorporate light colored fabrics everywhere (curtains, rug, chairs, you name it). I would also bring in as much lighting as humanly possible in addition to a few well placed, large mirrors to bounce the existing light around. I'm not sure if there is a light fixture in the ceiling, but this room could have a light fixture over the table be a really fun focal point. How To Brighten Up Deep Red Dining Room?
