I think I saw this in one of my magazines. If not this exact product, it was something very similar, and I've considered using them in my yard, which is very, very rocky and chock full of tree roots that make it nearly impossible to dig. Of course, my idea was to just use burlap bags... Hot or Not: Garden Soxx Planters | Apartment Therapy Re-Nest |

I cannot begin to express how happy I am to hear that people are finally discovering Conscious Discipline! It's what kept everyone sane in my Head Start classroom, and it was so amazing to have a classroom of three-year-olds that would say "I don't like that" versus laying the smackdown on their friends. You can also make fertilizer for houseplants. Put a peel in a big jar (the huge pickle jar- size) and cover in water. Then you just pour some into your watering can (not a lot, maybe an inch or two), top with water, and refill the jar. One peel will last nearly forever and, surprisingly enough, doesn't get completely disgusting. Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | 7 Ways to Reuse a Banana Peel |

I almost always end up putting together some kind of 'in case of minor emergency' basket-- bath oils for mommy, some Baby Bee bath stuff for baby, teething tablets (all-natural homeopathic awesome little things), and whatever other nifty health/happiness items I find within the price range. I still use them, but in moderation. I don't feel too bad, though, because those we do use end up in the compost pile rather than the trash. Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Why Being "Paper Towel Free" Is Overrated |

For the squirrels, the best thing I found is that if you put out some corn, they're much happier with that than your veggies. Try a hardware store to get the corn-- I think the brand I had was called "critter corn" and it was dried on the cob... Which leads me to think that it may be just as easy to grow a few plants just for the critters. Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Urban Homesteading: What Does That Mean to You? |

I think the best thing I've recieved that wasn't a thing was tickets to a conference on Conscious Discipline (it's an educational methodology based on brain research, now being used in Head Start programs and many, many public schools around the country). Even though I'm not teaching right now, I still use much of what I learned there, and I would never have been able to scrounge up that kind of money. I'm trying... But I consider myself more of a budding urban homesteader. This year I had a considerably large herb garden, but my vegetable haul was pretty sad. That being said, I've started getting seed catalogs in the mail and am planning to buy a dehydrator and deep freeze around tax return time, and then I'll be well on my way... I've been piling them into my flower/garden beds. So far, I've raked about four times, and none of the beds are quite covered, but with seven trees in the back yard and two gigantor maple trees in the front, I'm going to take a wild guess that my beds will be very well mulched by the time I'm sick of raking. The rest can stay on the ground. Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Eco-friendly Options for Fallen Autumn Leaves? |

On the list for our winter projects are 1: stripping off ninety years' worth of layers of paint from the cabinets, which also involves all new hinges and catches (which wouldn't be a big deal if I didn't need nearly eighty hinges and forty catches...), and 2: taking down and replacing the fake-tile paneling that was poorly installed before we moved here.
