The stainless was custom made by a friend to cover the back of the IKEA cabinets we used to create the island. :) @abs Not sure about the origin of the shelves as they were there when we moved in... I'll see what I can find out! @rexrayfan Totally! We like that the kitchen 'floats' in the middle of the space because we've been able to create a bedroom behind the kitchen. Personally, I wouldn't paint them - I couldn't handle the guilt. I'd start by changing out the hardware, painting the wall (even if it's just a less stark white) and getting a new rug. I think those quick fixes would vastly change/modernize the space.
