This same exact thing just happened to me too. I live in a small town in Florida and moved here from NYC where there are so many options. I was making a watermelon salsa 3 weeks ago and could not find fresh basil. At one point I considered just trying to go to Home Depot to buy a basil plant (if they had one) because I could not believe that there is no basil to be found in BASIL SEASON. Oh, and people love to say "go to the local farmer's market" but when your local farmer's market is during work hours on a Wednesday it isn't even an option.

Popcorn is a good alternative. It is high fiber, low calorie and you can spice it up any way you want with seasonings. You don't have to go with the brand name neon yellow "butter" flavored stuff. You can buy jars of kernels and pop them in the microwave in plain brown paper bags then add your own seasonings. I really like doing this because I prefer salty over sweet and love a crunchy snack too.

I use it in place of apple or cranberry sauce on the side with meat at dinner time. PB&J obviously, on buttered toast, in thumbprint cookies. I also love it on pancakes. If you mix it with a tiny bit of water and microwave it, stir it and put it on pancakes you can make it into more of a syrup rather than jam. I hoard lingonberry jam like nobody's business every time I go to Ikea so I think I've used it for pretty much everything I can!

I think of all people Gwyneth Paltrow is not someone I would look to for advice. I agree sugar is a problem now but she is pretty extreme in my opinion. She used to eat a macrobiotic diet and she has been frighteningly thin in some points of her career. I think she may have a bad relationship with food and maybe shouldn't be giving advice on this topic.

I would love to know an answer to this too. I bought a similar cutting board with bread slicing guide built in but it still doesn't make it that much easier in my opinion. The plastic is really flimsy. Maybe if they used metal instead so that it wouldn't bend while you saw back and forth with the bread knife it would work better.

I hate mayo so I wouldn't eat your precious BLT. If it has all the components of a BLT then it's a BLT to me. What if the lettuce is fresh spinach instead? GASP! THE WORLD ENDS. Not really... it's a sandwich, jeez.

I did the slow cooker method and it worked out great for me. I will definitely do it again in the future.

My mom's hippie best friend used jars for glasses when I was a kid and I thought it was SO COOL. I think it's a good idea if you're having a casual party and don't want to create a huge pile of plastic waste at the end, or use your everyday glasses, because you can always reuse the jars later.

A restaurant in NYC called Chipshop does a ploughman's salad with granny smith apples, stilton, lettuce, crumbled hard boiled egg and other stuff. It is SO GOOD. Thanks for reminding me I need to make this for myself at home!

I hate my electric oven and miss having a gas one. Where I come from gas is the norm but in the state where I live now hardly anyone has gas powered appliances. My oven is terrible and cooks unevenly but to be fair I don't know if that is because it's electric or just poor quality in general. All I know is that 5/10 times I bake something it will come out burnt on the inside and soupy in the middle even when baked at the correct temperature and amount of time. I miss being able to actually broil food also. The broil function on my electric oven is a joke.

Strudel and a glass of milk for Inglorious Basterds.

I bought one in 2008 and used it for most of 2009. Now I am on a diet and barely eat bred unless it is low calorie. I don't know what else to use it for anymore except making pizza dough. I don't want to get rid of it but I really don't need it anymore. Thankfully I am moving to a bigger apartment in the summer and I won't feel as bad about keeping it, haha.

I've been craving muffins all week so I plan to make a batch of Stonyfield's strawberry muffin recipe and freeze half of them.

I also want to try making my own jalapeno & cheddar turkey sliders with home made slider buns. I figured I could just take a hamburger bun recipe and make them smaller. We'll see how it works out in the end. I plan on using King Aruthur Flour's cheeseburger bun recipe to make the buns.

I need to find something to make with this Eggplant that I've been ignoring all week. Hopefully something more exciting than just roasting it.

Tonight I'm making turkey burgers with garlic rosemary roasted red potatoes & spinach salad. Yum!

I have this shark bottle opener from Animal House and I love it! I also have a whale ice cream scoop, duck chip clips, an octopus scrubber and a mouse cheese shredder. People always comment on how cute and modern they look. I would buy every item if I could!

Peas & carrots, peas on their own, waffles, chicken sausages, ground turkey, boneless skinless chicken breasts, chopped spinach, Morningstar products like the tomato basil pizzaburger which is DELICIOUS, and Steamfresh rice which I have about 10 packages of in my freezer currently. They are great for last minute meals on nights where I have no time and would normally order in.
