At the Brunschwig & Fils Summer '07 warehouse sale I found a carved Chinoiserie rosewood pedestal table, originally retailed at $1700, but because a leg was a little wobbly and easily fixed with epoxy, I got it for a whopping $50. As someone who has alwasy been wary of IKEA furniture when I saw the Karlstad I loved the shape so much that I decided to give it a try. I've had the white one nearly a year now & I'm really happy with how it's held up. I haven't had to wash the cover yet as you have to disassemble the sofa to remove it and on a day to day basis I mostly keep it covered. Of course, for guests I remove the cover & its still looking white! Before it's one year anniversary I will have to clean it. Now that IKEA has a new slipcover that I can put over it, I'll try it. Are you kidding me? I'd make the perfect guinea pig for AT. My whole life, I've been plagued with cold toes, fingers and nose, even in warm weather. I couldn't imagine living without thick warm socks, plenty of hot cocoa and especially cozy blankets to wrap myself with while I watch TV on the sofa. And worst yet, with oil prices on the rise, the last thing I can think about is cranking up the thermometer to keep warm in my apartment this winter. I am obsessed with this set as well. That dining set is made by Danish (Finnish??, maybe some other erudite APT'er knows more about him) designer, Hans Olsen, for Frem Rojle, probably around 1955. There is another style similiar to The London Urchin apartment one, but the chair sits on 3 legs. It is adorable! And is commonly referred to as Round Table and 4 Tripod Chairs.
