I've been coveting some Aimee Wilder wallpaper, but it is way out of our price range.

I agree with all the posts about finding an architect, especially one that you communicate well with. When choosing an architect, make sure to look at their portfolio and also drive out to see some of the projects they've designed in person.
Architects are the best resource for getting you the home of your dreams. Aside from coming up with the design and drawings, a good architect will frequently be on your construction site examining the work of the contractors and making sure all proper materials and techniques are used. You would be surprised at what some contractors/home builders will put in a house just to save them a few bucks to get a bigger profit.

If you have a frayed electrical cord, you shouldn't be using it. It's hazardous. As someone who's worked in the computer service industry, there's no fix for a waterlogged computer except for replacing every piece of circuitry that's come into contact with water.

Faux finishes. Why would you want something fake adorning your house. Ugh! There's a million-dollar home for sale in a local yucky sub-division, and it boast 39 different faux finishes on the flyer. What the crap?! Who would want that?!

Studio 8 = Large ugly buildings with limestone. They all look the same except Met Retail.

PSP= Not local. They just happen to have an Austin office.

CakeinAustin: Those all interior designers, not architects.

I think Michael Hsu is definitely doing some great work in Austin as well as KRDB.

We hacked the Pax doors last year, but to go on a custom closet. The quality of the hardware and the door are very nice. All anodized aluminum and sturdy. You won't be able to mount the door on a flat wall with the ikea hardware, and I think you'll be hard pressed to find other hardware that will work with the door. I do suggest you use another brand of door that if compatible with hardware that will work on a flat surface or go with a pocket door.

The first was done by Jamie Chioco (http://chiocodesign.com/#ramoswhiteresidence), the 2nd is Michael Hsu (http://www.mhsudesign.com/projects/fino_9.html) and last is Kasey McCarty (http://kaseymccarty.com/). All of these designers were working under Dick Clark at the time, but have since left and started their own firms. Clark's firm has been the birthplace of many a good designer in Austin.

It's actually 2 and 3 bedroom, not 1 and 2. And, ErikTheRed, why in the world are you reading Apartment Therapy if you don't like modern design?!

Reminds me of too many "trying to be rustic" homes I saw growing up in Oklahoma. I think no matter how much they update this style, I'll never like it.

For those who are fretting about sheet ironing:

I have the Pure Beech modal sheets from Bed Bath and Beyond. They are by far the softest, most snuggly sheets I've ever felt in my life. You won't want to get out of bed. Also, they don't wrinkle unless you leave them crumpled in a ball for weeks. No ironing, beautiful sheets. Also, they are a great price ($80 for a Queen I think). Check them out.

Natural light is way better for putting on makeup and for waking yourself up in the morning. It's easy to install privacy film on a window. You can buy it in the window section of your local home depot.

We have silestone counters in urban cream. If you watch the sales at Home Depot, you can eventually get a really good deal. It looks better than granite, has great color selections, and is anti-microbial. You can't beat that!
