If many of the commentators went to the source of the project, a lot of the assumptions would be cleared up.
For instance, the tile is not tile at all. It is joint compound that was made to look like tile.
The cost of everything else may have been from sales, thrifted, re-hab stores, etc. It probably is very possible to do it for the that price with a little planning. Many items they may have had already too (which is then an unlikely estimate to those who would be starting from scratch). Either way, its a great project, creative and well executed. The cheapest I saw for a primer (new) was $9, $10 for polyurethane and about $4 for joint compound. The acrylic paints the renters used were .29 cents from the craft store.
Either way, it's possible for under $50-100.

I guess I haven't looked around much at drum shade prices - I found a basic white one that you can decorate for $15 at Target.
It's a pretty good sized one too. I use it for my floor lamp and it looks 10x better than the glass 'up light' it had (BTW, whoever else does that, the floor lamps top is not made for a shade like mine so it's kind of balancing, but it works pretty well for me)

Wow, the counter top kit is truly amazing! I am wondering though about the exposed particle board on the side. Will there be matching finishing laminate for the side, or paint it? I guess you can also put w/e color laminate on first if there is unfinished/exposed edges and then paint it w/ the rest of the counter top?

Thanks for the link too. This will be in my archives for future use! :D

I have that same black rubber mat... :D

What's nice about this project, you could still use the mat after paint was used with it b/c 1)it's on the underside, 2)it can easily be cleaned off!

Great project!

That was a cute video! My cooking so far today was brunch. [I will share for those who like to be inspired: Porridge (soaked overnight w/ whey) with honey, cream, and ground flaxseeds-the flax gives it a different taste, but if you don't like flax just skip it; Poached egg w/ s&p in a sandwich of homemade bread (wheat w/ basil, rosemary &garlic) w/ butter and homemade soft cheese (dill, garlic, s&p)-broiled then added poached egg; vanilla black tea w/ caramel macchiato creamer; perrier's pamplemousse rose (grapefruit); and if I wanted to add fruit that would be on the side but my apples/grapefruit were a disappointment from this last shopping time, or I could also have my homemade yogurt w/ honey and w/e other toppings.]

:) Till I start classes again in January I won't have this much time on the weekdays, but I enjoy cooking/baking, and now fermenting, etc. b/c it's a challenge that and it makes the hubby happy and the tummy happy!

Keep experimenting with cooking everyone! You'll be surprised what food actually tastes like fresh instead of in a box! :D

:) You have Dostoevsky books! Cool. I read The Brother's Karamazov, my husband's read more, like Crime and Punishment (he enjoys the Russian novels).
Not a bad look for a bachelor pad either.
