Late post, but wanted to share with latecomers (anyone who finds this link through a google search, perhaps) my fake-meat discovery that for me has made giving up chicken much, much easier. Vegeusa, sold in Whole Foods, has a vegetarian chicken drumstick product (see link below) that is out of this world. It comes with sauce but it's so good I've never even bothered to try the sauce.

Frankly, probably wouldn't have thought to try this product if a family member hadn't bought them for me one evening. After all, fake meat, as everyone above has said, doesn't usually have much subtlety of flavor; esp for chicken, it's just kind of chewy and salty. But the Vegeusa things are unlike any I've ever tried. They've actually changed my diet-- they're almost my go-to comfort food when I'm in a rush and want, well, chicken, if I still was eating chicken (ie, at least once a week).

Try them. Swear you won't regret it. It's an absolutely divine product. I microwave 2-3 of the (frozen) drumsticks for 1 minute and then fry them up in a teeny bit of olive oil. Crispy boneless chicken experience, tender, with that kind of tough shredding experience that most fake meat doesn't give. (!) Hey, sometimes having a substitute is the key to staying on the wagon....

Hi Julia,

great couch!! You might try Bloom & Company, which I found off of Angie's List a while back; they seem fairly affordable from the estimate they gave me for a pair of bergeres ($650), though I haven't yet used their services.

Ehy2k-- I think you're thinking of E. A. Davis, in Wellesley next to Blue Ginger. Their upholsterer is a true professional, but he's extremely pricey-- he quoted me around $4000 for the same pair of chairs (given that they are antiques, he wanted to use horsehair to refill the cushions, etc).

All best!
Phoebe

personally i think it's gorgeous, and i like the fact that it looks like the books are a little disordered-- makes you want to use them, move them around, read them!

It would be so great if this were offered nation-wide.

how much guidance do they give about what can and can't be put in there? i know for regular composting there are certain things you wouldn't put in, like meat, corn cobs, eggshells, just because they take too long to break down.

Lesley; what about a bin liner? it's maybe slightly less green, but you're still reducing tons and tons of garbage. My parents have a compost that they've used forever, and they always line their under-sink container (and then reuse the plastic bag, sometimes... i think.).

chintz can be great but this one doesn't make it. the green is too muddy, for one.

and the legs make the whole thing look as if it's trying too hard to be hip, which makes it doubly sad.

i am the one "no" vote, but just because i felt like going against the grain.

Kelly Wearstler's boutique hotel in Beverly Hills, Maison 140, has karate chopped pillows all over the lounge on the first floor, and it works.

best type of lamp i've ever owned-- lasts forever, always looks cool in any kind of set up, and can be used for task light (in downward position) or ambient light (if tilted up to the ceiling). perfect gift for someone off to college or in a 1st apartment or a pair as a wedding present. long live luxo!

love that you left the door open in the first picture-- seems to me like that says it all about the vibe of your place: it feels very open, fun, playful, and carefree.

i think all bright white furnishings with clean lines (nix the faux-velvet...) could really give this space some lift and some light. right now the metals and the grays and the reds and the maroons give it a dungeon-y feel, which i'm sure isn't the look you're going for. i think it needs more california, more rexroth, more trina turk.

our condo doesn't allow anything in the hallways-- we even got asked this past fall (via letter!) to remove a pumpkin outside our doorway due to a neighbor's fear that the pumpkin would attract mice. we thought that was taking things a little far.
