Limeliteshines, I don't think the point is that they shouldn't post this stuff. I think the point is that its great to celebrate cool things like this...but its a pretty mean backhanded compliment to say "Look how cool this is! Aren't you glad its not in your neighborhood?"

Saying "oh this is neat! I'm glad there are laws that keep it out of *my* neighborhood" is pretty snarky, and not a very gracious way to display other people's art, IMO.

You would think that AT would be supportive of free expression of creativity. Apparently they are, but NIMBY.

Hm. I was going to say what Kristin said. But a second look gave me another idea: What if you put the bed against the wall that separates the living space from the kitchen? You could use shelves or something to create a "hallway" from the door into the dining room area, and use the dining room and that corner of the living room as your living space. Seems like having the "bedroom" near the bathroom might be a good idea, or at least, a better idea than having it near the kitchen.

Honestly though, I have a terrible time estimating space, so there might not be enough room for that.

I think its beautiful! And honestly, I do think one driving concept behind this site is the idea that it is worthwhile to create something beautiful. If not, then all of what is featured here is just waste. We do all kinds of things to beautify our homes that are not *necessary* and thus are wasteful, if that's how you want to think about it.

Not to mention that the plastic they "wasted" is nothing compared to what is wasted every single day. I bet that if one large grocery store stopped using plastic bags for one day, that could offset the plastic they used.

Emmaduck, it never occurred to me to let my landlord know either. I suppose it depends on what type of place you live in - I live in a large complex, and seriously doubt they want to hear about it every time someone goes out of town! I might leave a signed note that says "so and so is house sitting for me, blah blah blah" just so that there is no confusion about who is/is not supposed to be in my place.

I agree with every darn comment above me! Mixed use areas are so so important for creating thriving areas. And as bepsf said, a mix of housing types would be really beneficial.

My first thought about this was "1 and 2 bedroom?" I don't see how houses of that size will have a very broad appeal, especially among folks who want to live in the 'burbs. A 2 bedroom house becomes pretty small when you add a kid or two to it.

When I read those trash reduction blogs, it seems that a HUGE part of it is reduction of trash, period. The fact is that recycling is great - but it doesn't work for everything. An important part of the equation is to buy products with less packaging, or don't buy them at all. (And of course, its important to remember that recycling still has a cost. It takes energy, for one. Its always better to reduce your total waste output, even if most of it can be recycled.)

Elizinphilly, I don't know about frozen food bags - but I'm fairly certain that chip bags aren't just plastic. They have that shiny layer in them, and have such a different texture than other plastic bags...I wouldn't think they were recyclable with plastics, although I don't really know.

I wonder if it leaves a residue when you remove it. It seems weird that they give its lifetime in months, rather than dryer cycles or something.

I only use fabric sheets when I have something extra-static-y to wash. Otherwise, I really can't tell the difference.

Don't use nightcrawlers. You want redworms.

If you want to go the cheap route, try to find some worm-binners in your community who are willing to share!! Or collect your own - the link I share below has some brief instructions. Otherwise, I ordered from Uncle Jim's worm farm, linked above. I will warn you though, that a lot of my worms died after arriving. I ordered in the middle of winter - maybe not the smartest plan, but figured that they must have some sort of PLAN for the cold weather, since they don't say anything about when to ship. Turns out that's not the case. :/ I imagine summer could be just as bad. Maybe wait until fall, OR try to find a local source. If you're in Syracuse, I'll give you some!!

And I give my worms citrus all the time - they seem to like it fine.

If you didn't see this link on the previous post, I'd recommend checking it out - its my favorite guide to wormbinning, and has helped me keep a happy healthy bin for years. http://whatcom.wsu.edu/ag/compost/Easywormbin.htm Obviously, skip the section on how to build your worm bin. The simple composting directions are below.

Fiona, the other thing that just occurred to me is that you may simply be adding more food than your composter can handle. I know that this is the case for wormbins - adding too much is the number one reason that you'd get flies, I think. I don't know whether that's also true of conventional composting.

I would just go with a paint job or wall paper like others have suggested. The rail itself makes for an interesting look...you could play that up instead of trying to work around it.

hrhprincessfiona, are you burying the new compost under a layer of composted soil or something very rich in carbon (not nitrogen!)? In my apartment worm bin, I cover the compost with a piece of cardboard to discourage flies, and also bury the new compost under the old. If you don't have enough composted material to bury the new stuff under, you could use a layer of cardboard, newspaper, or something like corn husks.

For anyone who is interested in having an apartment wormbin, I've been keeping one (following the instructions found here: http://whatcom.wsu.edu/ag/compost/Easywormbin.htm) for years. It never smells or causes other problems - as long as you follow the guidelines you should be fine. Its a really easy and fun way to reduce your output of garbage, and deal with those tough foods that can't go down the disposal.

Also, unlike the composting supplies posted here, you can do the whole thing for 10 bucks (if you can get the worms for free).

I love the idea of adding a pocket door - then it can be left open for that airy look, but also provide any privacy that folks want. I personally would HATE having no door on the bedroom, and would be reluctant to live in a place without one.

Lisa - I live in a place where even loud laughing, or normal talking on the balcony is easily heard by neighbors, if they have their windows open (and most of them do during the summer, since we're po' folk around here, and AC is so expensive!) Even a really low key 'party' (like having 4 people over for dinner) can be loud, unfortunately.

(I'm under 25, but know PLENTY of people over that age that enjoy a good tune at high volume!)

"Why not throw your party elsewhere?"

Uh...maybe because you're kind of poor, but still want to have fun with friends? Not everyone has the option of going elsewhere. I don't personally think that means they should be barred from having a few friends over (because really, even a small party can be noisy if you're in close quarters.)

I can see calling the police for a large drunken party. But because the TV is too loud? Seriously, go knock on the door. Your neighbor is most likely not a crazy lunatic who is going to kill you for dropping by. And while I would be FURIOUS if my neighbor called the cops because my TV was too loud, I would be meek and embarrassed and vow to be more considerate if the neighbor dropped by to ask me to tone it down. Mutual respect, people!!
