@joelfinkle - great suggestions (zucchini fritters come to mind)! Also would like to add/single out: socca, an easy (and gluten-free) chickpea flour crepe.

It has been a long long time since a post on this site made me smile and want to comment. Thank you. And I will try the jeans-ice method!

Cheese of any kind, olives, sun dried tomatoes, a dollop of pesto or a drop of quality olive oil on bread - this is not unusual in the Mediterranean. Or prosciutto for non-vegetarians, or a sweet breakfast of bread or yoghurt with home made fruit jam. This is happiness for me. I do also on rare occasions enjoy some fish pate on toast, made from last night's dinner leftovers. If you have access to fresh fish you do not waste it. Don't be shy!

Funny, both photos illustrating this post contain a very visible PC (ok, the second one a mac too).

Leaving the door open, even slightly, is key. What about using a childproof (catproof) door lock or similar item that will keep it ajar and keep everyone safe? I actually leave the door of my machine only slightly open and this is enough to keep it dry and mold free. I do a vinegar run only once a year, but then I do not use fabric softener in the rinse cycle.

These are truly an "after" photo. Keep them white, think about changing the pulls and bench upholstery to another color if you need a change.

Theresa, I never ever comment the house tours but this is excellent editing, a great sense of color, and utterly functional. A real home. I'd love the sweater chairs in my own home.

"We'd stick to $600 splitting a real apartment with a roommate". Yes, we would. But, we (me included) are super comfy in our first-world lives. Read the article. She "earns about 4,000 yuan (US$586) a month at an advertisement company in Beijing" and supports her family. This is about bare survival, not choice, and it's not pretty.

I've got a wonderful kitchen now, but when I just started working and moved out on my own I only had a tiny barely equipped kitchen (just 3 things: double burner portable electric stove, small fridge, extremely small sink). Still, I cooked daily. Only baking (no oven) was impossible. Although some things did not work out (wok, for example, burner not hot enough), I managed fish, meat, vegetarian, sautés, pastas and curries - with two burners I could have rice on one and curry on the other, for example. It was cramped once in a while (more complex recipes with several steps and pots, custards and like), but with my trusty electric kettle and french press to handle tea/coffee I ate at home 90% of the time (and I love variety). If you add a toaster oven or a microwave - you'll have no problem at all.

I want to sleep on that porch right now. Since I live some 4800 miles from Minnesota this will be very difficult. Love the overall simplicity.

My wish for the New Year is that AT sites get better photo navigation. Having to scroll down and up and up and down and click and scroll - I gave up at row 3 image 2. Please. Do it already. This has never worked and we have been so patient.

"1 A modest breakfast" - sure, but you missed the little jar of caviar. OK, probably not the real deal, but some less expensive fish roe. And I spot some goats cheese in the fuzzy background, or is it just my imagination running wild?
I plan strawberries, yogurt and honey for tomorrow morning on my balcony - a working Saturday, or it'd be some strawberry-rhubarb compote pancakes (with fresh mint) or a mozzarella, tomato & basil plate - favorites this time of the year!

Yes, show us more! So much light, nice. What is in the cabinet in the corner? A collection? Hm, if only my partner would allow IKEA PS consoles... Also, I always like to see I'm not alone in my love for lights hung on windows.

No fragrant candles in my home ever, no way, not ever. I recently got one as a gift and kept in on the balcony as it stunk so bad (fake chemical vanilla) even packaged and wrapped (and unlit, of course!) until I could get rid of the thing (found someone who actually wanted it).
If you use them (or other smell-producing things) in the home, how do you enjoy your meals? Or do you use them only far away from the kitchen and dinning area? This puzzles me. I like to taste my food.

These were very common up until a few decades ago, my grandmother owned one just like the top photo. Some residential buildings in my town built in the '20 to '60 have special poles to hang and beat the carpet in the courtyards. Imagine an age before everyone had a vacuum. They call it "spring cleaning" for a reason - you only swept the floors in the winter!

I'd say avoid the Eames DAR, DSR, DAW..., and especially the Eames RAR Rocker in baby blue with a sheepskin thrown over it - or you'll suffer from the "Domino staged look" which can definitely compete with the "catalogue look".
That said, I'm now shopping for a DAW, just can't decide on the color yet :-) maybe blue... and then a little woolly comfort to top it off...
And yes, we love the two Expedits that fit our living room perfectly and are a home for most of our books - and the nearest IKEA is two countries away (we live in Europe), so it was an effort getting them.
