It IS a bit IKEA-d out there...maybe you can try to personalize the IKEA pieces a bit more? (Examples: Painting, adding trim, etc.) I did/am doing that with a few of my cheaply-acquired pieces to add some personality to my space.

The weather is supposed to clear up today, so maybe I'll swing by since I work in Meatpacking. Read about it on other blogs, looks nice.

You can paint those and they would look nice. Do what the others are saying and use some paper in the backdrop.

If you want to be even more bold, you can give them some texture with glued-on shelves, fabric, decoupage (my Memorial Day Weekend project!!!), or something else. Be creative, play around with it I say.

"technically green"?

Way to crowbar that into every single post, AT. Doesn't the content of this article speak for itself? If you took that statement out, would it take away from the article?

I cringe at grammar mistakes, as well...but the fact of the matter is this: Turnover on sites like Apartment Therapy is a lot shorter than, say, a print magazine or newspaper. You have less time to do just as much work as a print publication because it's digital media and it has to be done now-now-NOW. So not so much time for editing.

Totally unrelated to the post. I love those spotlights...the linked IKEA ones are hideous, but Jodi's are nice.

The sheet suspenders that Doug mentioned are widely available. Here in NYC you can find them at the dollar store. Coincidentally I am going to buy some for my own sheets today.

Why would you paint over brick, especially when you are lucky enough to have it!?!

No cable, no land line. Just a cell phone, but I'm on a family plan with my mother in Virginia and my sisters in NC, so the total annual cost for MY share is...*calculating*...$120. Since I only talk to my family and my friends are mostly all on the same network (thus it's free) I very rarely go over my minutes.

I don't have any judgment on you, especially since you're trying to go to school. I was away to college for a whole year before I had a cell phone. Also, I left the country for about two years and travelled around. Pay-as-you-go 3G stuff--It'll save you a fortune. If it's working out, then good on you.

Definitely take off the blinds and get curtains.

And I don't know if this was said, but how about a pendant light or something hanging over that dining set of yours? That would add some drama.

When I was living in suburban Tokyo I moved a 30-some-odd-inch CRT TV from the city to my house via train. No caddy, no box, just me. My house was a 17-minute walk from the nearest station. I had to set it down on the street every now and then but it got there.

They aren't being tactful about it but newspaper folk aren't known for their manners, trust me. And unless you have a written agreement with them, they have just cause.

But rarely is any content truly 'original' these days. Also it is really hard to generate original content without manpower and I'm guessing AT just doesn't have enough to meet deadlines, keep a steady stream, etc.

I think AT should reach out to the readership for content now more than ever before. That's the only road.

Erykah Badu - Mama's Gun (the entire album).

And maybe a little Imogen Heap. Or Naomi. I'm very chill even when I clean.

I also like the roman shade and I think you are on the right track. You can lose the lamp but to me it makes the room look smaller...maybe go with the ceiling-to-floor drapes everyone else is suggesting.

And later, maybe some molding on the ceiling? Or something to "frame" it all? Know what I mean? Anyway, good luck.
