I do both when I want the seeds (i.e. when not too lazy!)- yank vanilla bean out of vodka/rum/random alcohol that it is infusing in, squeeze out seeds, slice open, get remaining seeds.

I am with sharms: ebay for vanilla beans. The beans I buy by the lb are as good as or better than ones I have bought for much, much more in stores (though peob not as good as trult premium vanilla beans- they are not dried out though). I store some in alcohol, some triple sealed in ziploc bags.

The best part about the vanilla beans being so inexpensive? I can grind them (used) with my coffee and add them to my tea.

Rice cooker + onions = a passable carmelized onion, with minimal (or no) stirring. Better if you keep the top of the rice cooker off.

I still eat the peanut butter balls from this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Kinder-Krunchies-Healthy-Snack-Recipes-Children/dp/B000PGAY28
It's actually one of the just 2 cookbooks in my kitchen (other being an old betty crocker), simply for the nostalgia of it.

Mostly very basic, designed so that it can be used in classes I think (includes questions to get kids to think, teach kids to cook). The recipes and layout are set up so that kids would be able to do many of them with just a bit of help, including reading the recipes. Recipes range from more complex like bread, granola, etc to juicing oranges and grapefruit together (something a kid could probably do themselves once you cut the fruits in half for them), and so on Everything is at least somewhat healthy- most of the recipes are more "healthy [but tasty] snack" and not so much dessert.

Fondue pots are what we use instead of a pan for frying- the curved sides help keep it from splattering.

s00ngtype- would love to hear more about making yogurt in the rice cooker! I use mine mostly to cook beans.

We have had good luck with Sears recently for a number of appliances (bank owned condos we are buying don't tend to have appliances in them :) ).

Best Buy...not so much- so bad, in fact, we will not be buying appliances from them again.

2 of 3 appliances had missing or not working parts (1 of which involved water then going all over the floor twice), had to have multiple service calls, and were not installed correctly- still waiting on one to be fixed properly. Distribution center also did not have the item we paid for (ordered a month early), and told us to ask the store for a part that was missing on another item(which the store doesn't carry and which should have come with the appliance to begin with). Service people have also failed to show up. Huge timesuck not worth the very small amount that may have been saved on the appliances.

madampince- You would have to use fingers or small peices of cloth instead.

We tend to use fingers to apply things like calomine anyways (but do have cotton balls!), and scarps of rags hold up better if you need to srub any sort of area with chemicals.

I love it pickled, even only lightly pickled. I use it to top eggs, stirfry, pasta...mix the pickles in with olive oil and other stuff for dips/spreads.

Garlic added right after roasting cauliflower is also good.

I have been flaked on so many times I don't give stuff away free on CL anymore. I ALWAYS end up waiting for a no show.

I tell people in my ad that they need to tell me when they can pick items up. If it is a large item that won't fit in a car I tell them they need to tell me they have a way to pick it up (truck etc).

Doesn't stop the flaking though, but I don't respond to anyone who doesn't give me a time.

My other pet peeve is people haggling with me when I tell them the price is firm multiple times- no, really, the price is firm. And no, I don't deliver (especially for things I am giving away free).

The biggest issue with winding a finer yarn is more that it is delicate or delicate sticky/fuzzy. Winder can be easily improvised!

You can make spindles easily out of toy wheel dowel or old cd dowel. You need to be spinning a thin yarn for those to work well though :)

I am with Melissa- I know some people who sell the yarn for that, but otherwise it is not worth the time for the money (even if done on a machine)! They need to specify yarn size too- otherwise they will be getting laceweight cashmere sweaters, and those are a b*tch to unravel, and the sample looks like a bulky yarn.

But...awesome idea. I hope it works out well for them!

There are scratches and a chunk bitten off from my door as testament to how little the cat likes being shut out of the bedroom. He will meow himself hoarse. Repeatedly.

It's cute that he sleeps on my pillow next to me, but I wish he didn't sleep in the bedroom.

I have 2 types- one that is much thinner and needs to be in a muffin tin, and ones that I thicker. I vastly prefer the thicker ones! I haven't had problems with them, besides the fact that popovers dont work well in them.
