I prefer to think of the people sitting on my furniture an investment. A $5k couch isn't gonna get my date pants off any faster than a $500. Unless he's the kind of guy that cares about how much $ I spend on a couch. And if you're that type of bloke you can put your pants back on and get out! Quality can be cheap. But cheap quality can also be expensive. Furniture is a hooker. Just because you spend more $ on it doesn't mean that it will love you back. I am glad to see most of the comments here are of the politely helpful variety. I guess people who discuss manners are mannerly people! I think things like table setting, please/thank you, walking properly, are all small things that instill much deeper understandings in children as they grow. Kids learn that there appropriate and inappropriate way of behaving depending on where you are. As in dining behavior is different than hanging with your friends behavior. I think this is missing from many children nowadays not because they are bad kids but because their parents resist the "hoity-toity, fancy-schmancy" manners enforced by previous generations. On one hand this is a good thing. Impeccable homes often hid horrible domestic abuses. Parents who were "strict" disciplinarians were often of the abusive kind. Also, manners sometimes seem a disguise for people vicious inner intentions. Take the Southern lady trope for example. I have a frined who says "bless your heart" when she means "you are f***ing stupid". Or when folks say "God bless the gays" when you know they think homosexuality is an abomination. Or when women are demonized for not being "ladies" yet men do not have to be gentlemen. How disengenous and hypocritical! Sometimes manners are used like a veneer to hide judgemental and vitriolic sentiments. I guess what I am saying is that good manners make everything more enjoyable but that they are a tool to be used for the betterment of society. But that good manners don't make good people, just as bad manners don't make bad people. Though it is nice to know how to set down a teacup without making a mess! This was an interesting post but its the comment that really interested me! Are there more cuckoos on AT than last year? Conspiracy theories, faux science, and alarmists, oh my! And what do you call feminists that bash on other feminist because their feminism is not the same as theirs? Anti-feminist-feminists? LOL! I don't have anything to say about armpits, I just think some of the commenters are a little... intense. Quick, Easy, Homemade Deodorant...that Actually Works Apartment Therapy Tutorial |

What about for the action mom? My mom would bop me on the head if I gave her any of this frou frou stuff! What about ideass for the hiking mom, the adventuring mom, the dance all night mom?! Not all ladies (and some gentelman-moms, this is 2013 after all!) like flowers and bunting. I'm getting my mama a nice set of power tools for her new home. And they're not even pink! I'd say "cozy" but i'll be honest and say really it's "crowded". Hahaha! I'm an artistic type and struggle with storage and organization. Also I'm a stacker. Stacks of books, boxes, papers, dishes... lol! I'm not a pack rat because ,surprisingly enough, everything I have I use. Investing in storage with doors is a priority for me to keep my place an eclectic, witch's cottage rather than a dirty, hobo's shack. :) Minimal vs. Cozy: Which is More \"You\"? |

The only things I have strong feelings about regarding bathrooms (other than cleaning regulary) is cool art and EXTRA TOILET PAPER WITHIN REACH! Any controversial/funny/weird art I always put in my guest bathroom. It is such a conversation starter! I have a print that states "never make eye contact while eating a banana" oposite the throne and visitors love it! Also, it is good advice. I have silly postcards, lyrics to songs, poetry, interesting pictures. I figure if my guest is gonna be in there for *ahem* a little while they should have something to think about. I do agree that bathroom art should not be expensive due to dampness problems. I also like plants in bathrooms. And flush the toilet with the lid down please, you animals! I had the same problem. I got a huge Wutang concert screen print from etsy for about $50. It looks so cool! It was so hard putting it up but sweat and elbow grease is free and the result is awesome. I think, getting a large print from an artisan is the most cost effective way of decorating tall areas. You can always check your local arts college for some cheap (relatively) artwork. Also, tapestries look super cool hanging from high areas. What To Do with Giant White Wall? Good Questions |
