Let me set the record straight for Wisconsin: the State drink is decidedly NOT a "Wisco Whiskey Sour".

It is a Brandy Old Fashioned. Period. To suggest a whiskey or bourbon base for this state's drink would be sacrilege.

2 cents: could the bottom layer be a meringue disk? I could see it softening a bit w/the jam & moisture (from the cake/air/etc) and becoming a little chewy like marzipan.

Yes - it was an aged provolone and even a tiny piece burned my mouth, it was soooooo sharp and spicy! Crazy.

How funny... I just made beignets w/my 5 year old yesterday. It's the "Mom, let's make a special breakfast" box he pulls out of the pantry almost every day, but especially on weekends.

Really, who could blame him. :)

Weeknights, about 30-40 minutes from start to finish - it includes no prep time except if I'm using something like a protein from the weekend (like cooking a pork roast on Sunday and using it for carnitas or a ragu during the week). It's usually the rice or potatoes that we're waiting for.

My local store (not TJ's, but they had them too) has frozen avocado halves - I think they're dipped in a citric acid solution before freezing, but they're bright green. I agree the texture isn't the same as fresh but in a pinch, they work great for tacos, smoothies and such. I let them thaw in the fridge.

I second the Dawn Power Dissolver - it's really effective. I used it on a pot that had burned-on rice (yes, I forgot about it) and it was sparkling afterwards.

It's too bad - the original post states they found them in a resale shop: http://www.houzz.com/discussions/200834/Hi--who-made-the-nightstands--They-are-gorgeous-#comments

Agreed - I know you may really reallllly want that whole knife block set, but I've honestly had just a Wusthof chef and paring knife (and a pair of poultry shears) and I can do ANYthing. Get those and a magnetic holder and you're set.

I'm looking forward to reading the entire series (the wedding catering was yours as well, yes? That was awesome, btw.)! One note: readers should do their research regarding a 203(k) option [disclaimer: I'm in lending] - some properties may not qualify for this rehab option and you will also need to find a contractor who is approved to handle FHA/203(k) renovations (among other requirements). The HUD website has a wealth of information about it. That being said, many people are not aware of the option - I'm happy you mentioned it!

I posted the suggestion earlier about oiling the board (which I still think is the best option)... I'm curious if you'll still be able to use chalk to write on it once it's "sealed" (if you even did that to label cheeses in the first place...). Let us know?

My go-to cookbooks that get dragged from city to city with me (in addition to Sundays at Moosewood):
1. The New York Cookbook (Molly O'Neill) - this NYer needs a good, solid recipe when I can't find my childhood favorites where I live now.
2. The New Laurel's Kitchen (Laurel Robertson) - one of my favorites for simple instructions for breads, beans, etc.
3. The New Basics Cookbook (Julee Rosso/Sheila Lukins) - still a great resource, even if it has a definite 80s sensibility
4. How to Cook Everything (Mark Bittman) - invaluable!
5. Toss up between Deborah Madison (any of her's, really, but I love The Savory Way) and Martha Stewart (MS Living Cookbook - because I'm a bit OCD and she appeals to that for me).

Why not oil (and then wash) the entire board so you don't have "splotches" of oil, but a smooth sheen instead?
