This room is fantastic. I'd love to live there (and I'm a 31 year old woman).

And who are we to judge? Personally I think spending money on an imaginative kids room is better than spending it on louis vuitton purses and shiny sports cars.

It's the first home-improvement my husband plans to make in our new house. Personally I don't really understand why people find them grosser than toilets. I mean, my first thought about toilets is "ewww" - but I really wouldn't consider having a home without one. If he likes a urinal better, why not?

1. Don't make assumptions about moving costs. I always assumed that do-it-yourself moves were cheaper (i.e. load the uhaul and drive). I recently moved from CA to PA and it turns out that having movers do the loading and driving was about 1/2 the price AND it was a lot easier. Call around (especially if work isn't paying for the move). Prices vary a lot.

2. Know the area before you buy. If you are moving somewhere familiar (i.e. you have lived there before or you have family there and have visited a lot) then you might know exactly where you want to live. But if you are new to the area, getting a "feel" for the neighborhoods is important. Finding a nice rental while you can figure out exactly what you want is often a smart idea.

3. Think about what is best for you. Generic online advice is helpful, but everyone is unique. For example, one of my friends has a child with autism who doesn't deal well with change. When she had to move, finding a temporary space wasn't a great idea for her - she wanted something permanent. Think about your family and what feels best for you. There isn't a "right" way to move.

My family is not vegetarian, but I am. If I'm cooking for non-veggie crowds, I've found that puff pastry or lasagne are generally the best bets. There are all sorts of puff pastry-squash combos out there. Lasagne seems a little less "seasonal", but I've received lots of compliments on a butternut squash and hazelnut lasagne. The butternut squash makes it seem a little more thanksgiving-ish:

I'm generally not a pillow fan, unless the pillows are serving a purpose. On futons (where the arms aren't padded) pillows are great. Having one pillow on the couch (so it can be used to sleep occasionally) is nice. I'm annoyed when I *can't* curl up on a piece of furniture because it is smothered in pillows.

I a sucker for orange (my orange counter was on AT SF a few days ago) and I'm a sucker for big dogs. I think I love you...

ValHalla - the orange "backsplash" wall is actually formica. I was thinking of trying to change it, but wasn't sure if i could paint or tile over it?

sunspot42 - thanks for the input. i'm *am* worried about my colors looking "dated" (can I really say that considering that I have orange countertops that already look very 70s?)?

idontdobeige - the negativity about the railing actually surprised me too! i have agreed with almost everything else that people have said. and it was so nice to have confirmation on my negative feelings (dislike for the light, the microwave, the cabinet hardware, the cabinets over the bar). It was also nice to get confirmation on my positive feelings (love the orange counters, the space in general, the potential, the big windows, the idea of orange and grey). But I actually don't hate the railing. I thought it was a kindof nice piece of 60s/70s charm...

Also, we are hoping to knock out the cabinets over the counter dividing the family room and the kitchen, but it might take a while. We want to convert the laundry room - which is the door next to the refridgerator) into a walk in pantry first, so we still have plenty of storage. And that means moving the laundry somewhere else. Fun times....

p.s. to everyone who mentioned the microwave cord, I think we are going to eliminate the microwave altogether.

citipearl - sadly, I don't think the fireplace is a veneer (although I will have to look closer. we officially move on July 3rd, and I can't examine until then).

matsayswhat - I actually love yellow kitchens. My sister did hers in yellow, but I thought with the orange it might be too much?

Wow! Thanks for all the quick advice! That was a lot of comments in a very short time... Thanks everyone :)

Some more specific questions:
1. I'm not planning to replace the counters. They were one of things I loved about this house. I do wish there weren't faded "sun spots" near the windows, any suggestions for fixing the faded spots?
2. I'm not fond of the lineoleum on the floor, but don't know what to replace it with. I'm afraid black (with the orange) would look very halloween-ish, but I don't know what else to do. Maybe a rug by the sink would help...
3. I was considering a backsplash (like the one mentioned by palindrome and JasmineIsDomestic), but the formica goes up the wall on one side. Can I backsplash over that?

lipstickonyourteeth - I do love that wallpaper.

In theory, I like the idea of highlighting one original detail. In this case though, I feel like making the rest of the room white detracts from the tile floor (aka "original detail"). It makes it not "fit" in with the rest of the room. Instead of making the cool floors stand out in a positive harmonious way, they stand out in an akward way.
