change the paint color to something dark (including ceiling but not molding). and what about 2 mirrors facing each other in the hall way to expand the space more? i see ceiling lamp so maybe change them to great pendent lamps to hit the top of the moldings. i don't think you need the rug there.

i dont think the question is if sasha can/should/need to paint or not...

so, okay, maybe just go with the accent wall color and go big with a red sofa? then just build on the modern architecture thing with polished metal and frosted glass pieces (like for a coffee table) and crisp whites (no black anything as it would look very '90s with that building). also mix in natural stuff like graphic grass-woven pieces and leather pieces so the modern is not too "cold"... big art is a good idea, but i mean, it has to be really BIG to be in proportion with the big walls.

i'm not crazy bout that wall color but it's kind of safe/neutral enough to have your furniture pop against it. good luck and have fun!

i actually like this more than the lego and park ones. it's less literal and more graphic.

- a little editing is good, but don't get rid of too much stuff like most people suggested. i love your collection and the little vignettes and groupings. very sweet.
- paint all the exposed walls a nice soft warm white or a really pale color. not stark white though. with the big stainless steel in the middle of the room, it'll make your kitchen look like a hospital.
- leave your fireplace natural bricks or paint it black or something.
- make glass cabinet doors for all exposed shelves. i think that would hide the stuff in the shelves a bit without closing them off, and add some sparkle from the reflections too. but if it's still too busy, maybe do some cool paper or fabric behind the glass to hid them a little.

seeing the sheet seams is one of my biggest pet peeves. best bet is to ask ann sacks (or where you purchase the tiles) for referrals and they are happy to give you a list of people that have installed with their tiles before. you might pay a lil bit more, but it's worth it.

not agreeing with the thing about trying to "hide" the white toilet with white wall color. everyone knows you have a toilet in a bathroom. they do too. and most likely it's white. just treat it like a big white vase :)

prob not white-white, but what about a shade of it, like a warm light gray? it'll pick up the warm tones in both the cabinetry and (the yellow in) the green so the whole space feels more finished. we did similar green mosaic tiles in our guest bath too and it looks great with the warm gray. i think it softens the walls a bit so you look at the tiles more > (lower/right images) http://bp3.blogger.com/_hrcLr7-YR48/RkH10LPMbvI/AAAAAAAAAAM/ShzKYfADnT4/s1600-h/CIMG0077.jpg

i believe the original one is the schonbek chandelier by tobias wong that was commissioned by swarovski... it was shown at the cooper-hewitt national design museum in nyc.

definitely Alpine White. it'll look the most crisp and expensive with the dark rustic wood shelves. any colored ones would look cheap and plastic-y.

then paint the back wall (between counter and shelf, and backs of each shelf) to pick up an orange or green from the other room. also this way, it'll be easy to change colors as often as you like.

the show was disappointing and kinda boring... :( i've been to the nyc version and it was a little better. artLA starts 1/25, so hopefully that'll be more inspiring.

i don't know why people dont like this! i think it looks great. loving colors doesnt mean it has explode in your face. this is very simple and elegant. brown is used as neutral with little punches of red and silver.

very inexpensive makeover to make your kitchen look like a million bucks:
- paint the walls a mid-dark shade of warm gray so the stone parts feel more incorporated. can be as dark or light as you're comfortable with. but should be dark enough to feel connected to the stones.
- paint all wood cabinets clean, crisp white in matte. the back of the shelf (between stove and sink) should be the same gray as the wall-- or go darker like a nice chocolate brown would look nice with the new cork flooring.
- buy new hinges and pulls. milk glass pulls in a simple modern shape would work nice in that room.
- buy new faucet finishings.
- buy a grassy organic roman shade over the window. hanging from all the way up to ceiling to make the window look larger than it is.

what about just a beautiful hand painted or inlaid wastebasket? or rig a towel bar in between the legs? it's really not bad. better than than those ugly cheap sorta-wood built-in thing right?

what a great big airy bathroom. but yea, it does look bit outdated.

i think you should leave the tiles alone for now. they're expensive, and these are a nice neutral gray...

i do think you need to rip out that vanity asap and replace with 2 separate vanities (like the ikea ones for a reasonable budget). and instead of that big, empty mirror, maybe get 2 decorative mirrors with frames to soften all the hard lines.

some window treatments... maybe something organic like grass roman shades.

replace door with a frosted glass-paned door?

and of course, paint some colors on the walls! good luck and have fun!

Apartment Therapy - Good Question:How to Update a Bathroom on a Budget?
10/11/07 9:47 PM

i think it's a good idea to make that a hang out area while things are happening in the kitchen. so have something fun to do -- paint the big wall with chalkboard paint. you can do the dark green or black, but martha stewart has a story in her January issue where you can mix your own colors. http://www.marthastewart.com/portal/site/mslo/menuitem.3a0656639de62ad593598e10d373a0a0/?vgnextoid=d47f3a6f5c470110VgnVCM1000003d370a0aRCRD&autonomy_kw=chalkboard%20paint&rsc=ns2006_m2

since the space is not big enough for a regular dinning table, then maybe a smaller one for multiple use (breakfast, work, appetizers, bar setup for parties) that you can utilize with or without chairs. and the chairs can be fun and informal and can also be stools which you can easily tuck away when not needed.

Apartment Therapy - Good Questions:What to Do in the Den?

- lean a tall floor-length mirror against the wall. it can be where the buffet is, opposite the windows. this way, it would reflect some window light in the room and also "cover up" some of the wood wall. black frame? white frame? depends on your new dining set.
- update the dining set and chandelier. center the table so it's under the chandelier, which should hang lower. ...maybe slip-covered chairs?
- bigger area rug. doesn't have to be crazy-patterned or colored. just lighter and about double the size of your existing one. monochromatic dhurries are great, easy to care for, and modern. maybe shades of light steel-blue stripes?
- get rid of the existing window coverings. they look wimpy and are hung too low. get one rod that goes all the way across the windows and hang as high as possible to the ceiling. then get silk drapes in gold or beige-y tones at both ends (depends on your new rug or chandelier). double-up on both sides so they look substantial and shimmery. they must just touch the floor. doesn't have to be expensive-- try cost plus worldmarket stores, or even ikea.
- if you can't get rid of the blue wallpaper, maybe work it into the room by using different shades of it. don't use the exact color, but various shades of it. this can be the runner, vases, napkins, chair coverings, chandelier shades, etc...
- get rid of existing artwork and wall-hangings. it's cluttery and draws too much attention contrasting against the blue walls.
