thanks for the comments :) the elephant was from Home Sense - a Canadian discount home department store, but I got it ages ago. and yes, the spool pattern is a great one - the key to balancing we finally figured out was to start at the bottom branch. attach the bird(s) you want to be on the bottom branch, then take a finger and balance the stick on one finger - the place on the branch where your finger is balancing it is where you need to attach the string to go up to the next level. repeat this on every branch moving up - put your birds where you want them and then find the balance point and attach the strings - tricky, but doable!
