we usually can't eat 3 or 4 heads worth, so I use a quart jar and cram about 1/2 a head in there. it's a manageable amount for a first timer as well! I can't reccommend enough Sandor Ellix Katz's book Wild Fermentation. it's WONDERFUL and perfect for the first time fermentor.

my cat likes to pull the food out of her bowl when she eats for some reason, leaving little brown bits all over the place.

I solved this by getting a great old vintage platter at the thrift store. it looks great and catches all of her crumbs!

great idea! My mother does this for my teenage brothers. She makes a month's worth of "mcmuffins" and freezes them. Then, my brothers just take them out of the freezer, reheat, and breakfast is served!

I use an old enameled stock pot I found that someone was throwing away. It has a lid and works perfectly to keep out the bugs. this looks really nice and small enough to keep on the counter. I keep mine in a cabinet under the sink, which can be a nuisance.

Wild Fermentation, by Sandor Katz (http://www.wildfermentation.com/index.php) is a fantastic, down to earth book that allayed any intimidation or nervousness I had about fermenting foods at home. I highly recommend it, and I highly recommend trying to make your own sauerkraut at home!
