I think Parnassus is smart by breaking down the elements to what he thinks is comfortable and what you like in a modern sofa.
He'll want:
a deep seat,
higher loose back cushions
bench seat cushion
long enough to lie on

You'll want:
Sleek lines
tall legs - maybe metal
straight thin arms

Check out our Case Study sofa at Steven Anthony Inc. We can make this in any length, any depth, bench cushion, with or without tufting, and your choice of legs. Great choice of fabric or leather http://www.stevenanthonyinc.com/sofas/2-039.php

If you can't find the intensity that you like in regular paint, try spray paint. Depending on the application...

There is some seriously bright spray paint available!

Re-grouting and recaulking, by the way, is really easy :) Find a good tutorial on youtube and you'll have it done in an afternoon. I've done it a couple of times in my own bathroom

Most people will hate this idea, but if the floor is really bad, look for a cut-to-fit bathroom rug. I can't find them here any longer, maybe you'll see them in Switz. It is a rubber backed bath room about 5x6' that you cut to fit your floor for a wall to wall rug. It changed my bathroom completely! Just throw it in the wash once a week.

Peg boards are great! I used one as door on a book shelf.
I cut the pegboard the same size as the bookshelf, attached a long wooden strip down one side. The attached hinges to the edge of the bookshelf and to the wooden strip. It stays closed with a magnet on the opposite side.

Turns a bookshelf into a pantry AND you can hang your pots on it!

That sofa looks exactly like the Gracie Sofa from the now defunct CA manufacturer RFM. who I represented in the early 00s. They were sold at a number of stores in SF. I work with a new manufacturer and continue to sell that style. I have one myself- love it!. You can see it in this picture of my living room here ( I cut the buttons off to throw it in in wash):

If you are interested, I can have one made for you a lot cheaper than retail and with no tax :)

I'd be happy to send photos from the catalog and discuss designs options with you.

Hi Tara,

I'm a furniture designer based in NYC and make custom pieces like this for stores and private clients for near wholesale prices. I can certainly make a sofa for you that is similar to the Jasper (I would recommend bench cushions though for a cleaner look). Or I can send you pictures from my catalog of similar styles.

I specialize in working with odd spaces and small apartments - I'm in NYC afterall!

You can see my new line of furniture for people with dwarfism, little people, BIG DESIGN, at my evolving website lpbigdesign.com

note: my manufacturer is LA but since I'm in NY, there would be no sales tax :)

Apartment Size Sectional Like This One? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles
12/5/09 5:28 PM

Density for seat cushions is a tricky thing to say what is better. Modern sofas with their straight lines typically have a thinner seat cushion, often 4" high. The thinner the cushion, the higher the density needed. A shabby chic style sofa often has a seat 6" thick, lower density foam and a down wrap. It is also a fluffier, softer look and feel.

Bepsf is right in a lot of ways, but it depends on the style. You won't find down seating on a very expensive Knoll case study sofa, ie.

Foam itself has many different qualities that are reflected in the price. I typically use a soy based, green foam in my designs which is a much better quality than many other foams of the same density. I also offer a very high resiliency foam that comes in different densities that will hold up to heavier weight and use.

Softer is preferred by some and bad for those with back problems. The more dense, the harder the seat. It's all subjective. If it feels good to you, it is the right thing.

Room and Board sofas are in general not the best quality. But they are a good value for the money and you should be happy with the sofa for quite a while.

If you find you need new cushions, go see Vinny at Economy Foam and Futon on 8th st/6av in the West Village. He'll show you the difference in densities and help you with what is good for your situation. They do great work and I hire them for all of my local cushion work.

I think the wall just needs to get dressed!

If you paint the bricks, paint a warm cream. I really don't think a grey would complement the wood walls which are beautiful.

Create a mantel using just a thin shelf that runs the entire length of the the brick, under the window and then across the the top of the fireplace. Under the window would be a great place for some plants and a few books which would add color, life and break up the brick. Over the fireplace you wouldn't need to put anything because the painting looks great where it is.

A rug would help and you could run the lamp cord under it. The table is too high for that space and is making it look cluttered. Clean the brick in the fireplace, fill with candles if you don't actually burn logs in there. Get a great set of fire tools. Even if you don't use them they would look great to the right of the fireplace.

Good luck! You've got a great start!

Hi,

I design affordable custom upholstered pieces and recently made a daybed similar to the Lubi for a client looking for something in white leather with a tufted top like the Barcelona Chair.

A nice solution may be a piece like the Lubi in its function but with arms on each side. I would be able to make something for you in the fabric of your choice and much better quality.

I would love to talk to you more about your request and show you some options.

Humidifiers! It sits on the floor, in the way.I had a great one designed in the 60s that was beautiful, glass, and sat on a chrome stand so it looked good on a table. But sadly, it broke. Besides the humidifiers that look like animals, there is nothing available that doesn't look like exactly what it is.
