I still don't get how a flat panel tv from the likes of Sony or Samsung is an eyesore. It takes the same design cues as a laptop computer or an ipad. How come no one complains about those appliances being an eyesore or for that matter a kitchen appliances like your dishwasher or fridge? Please enlighten me. I do like the blend of natural materials and modern designs, like maple paneled speakers.

"If you play computer audio (and let's face it, who doesn't) then get yourself a decent DAC..."

Would the DAC make a difference if audio is just going into a digital receiver/amp? Or do you only really need a DAC if your putting computer audio through an analog receiver like you're doing?

I second the metal or black-brown stained furniture. Also think about a fabric headboard: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S99849942

Ahhh....Chicago's perpetual "test-driving" of recycling programs. We need city-wide recycling ten years ago. And fine people who don't do it. Pretty soon the Calumet area will be one large dump. What a blight on our city. I laugh every time officials say we're a green city. Two coal fired power plants operating within the city limits and no program! WTF?

People need to get over their fear of talking to stangers. I see it all the time on public transit. If you ask someone nicely to not recline their chair too much and they want to be an a-hole then respond in kind. But simply starting off by thinking, "I paid for this seat I can do whatever I want in it" only shows you haven't learned how to act like an adult.

I would get a router that you can plug an external harddrive (if you use one) directly into and share over your network.

I would consider necessity first. If you need internet or cell phone for work than that's the last to go. Then the non-essentials like sat tv, netflix and video game subscription. I think a netflix subscription (I don't work for them) is worth so much more than what you pay. While Cable/Sat are nto a good value considering you can get OTA. I have both but when I didn't two movies a week and OTA tv was adequate entertainment.

@ MIT Professor

You can't compare electricity in a home to a car because the electricity was likely produced by coal which creates much more pollution than that "one seconds worth of gasoline." Who is this guy and how did he get a job at MIT?!

I like to unplug my power strips when I won't be home for a few days or longer. TV, DVD player, Xbox, harddrive, computer, display, router, modem, stereo, cable box. I don't know if it makes a difference but it seems like it would.

I think someone should do a study on whether the mercury in a CFL (which can be disposed of properly) is less/more than the amount of mercury put into the atmosphere by the electricity required (presumably from coal) for an incandescent bulb.

"...industrial shelving...it's virtually dust free."

I really like this shelving for the kitchen but not so much for your electronics and media. The dust just ends up on or in your receiver and DVDs.

@Benji: The issue of a sling box is another topic.

The picture above should answer any questions about using a projector to watch during the day.

The thing to do is think about when you do most of your viewing. I bought a LCD so I could watch tv in my sunny apartment but now I kind of regret it because I usually only watch movies at night and that's when I want better picture quality. Other things to consider, as previous posters mentioned is replacing bulbs and also how long a projector takes to start up. If you have the means I think a large plasma is the most versatile and the best buy.

If you want true HD, 1080, which is a good idea for such a large screen then that will cost ~$2000. I would recommend a very large plasma. I think a high end plasma or even lcd has a comparatively better picture the projector's picture at the local AMC. And unless you live in a cathedral a 50-60 inch tv screen in plenty big.

Totally agree Sunnyblue.

Enclosing a TV like that can cause it to overheat. Sony has a diagram in the manual about doing something like this.
