i need eco-help. as i was reading these posts i realized i am being a wasteful and not-planet-friendly person, even tho i though i was recycling everything i could. my confession-every once in a while i just replace my ikea shower curtain liner (clear plastic, i think $1.99 each) with another one and throw the old one out. can they be recycled? i apologize to the planet. no matter what you do, you can always do better. i guess.

Very, very specifically, I'd like a loft in the building above the Red Hook, Brooklyn Fairway supermarket, with of view of the Statue of Liberty. Today, that is.

Oh, I'd love that room today! What a nice mom. When I was 20, my mother announced they were selling the home my parents built when my mother was pregnant with me. Since I had no idea I'd grow up to be, first, a textile designer and later, an art and antique appraiser, I turned down her offer to take some of the furniture. Guess who is sorry now? I still daydream about the round glass coffee table with brass legs.

Can accomplish much drying of things that can't be tossed in dryer.......use a combo of an Ikea drying rack in old-fashioned tub, plus shirts on hangers that go onto the shower rod, small items just tossed over doorknobs, a sweater or nice t-shirt over the towel rack...and if something is just damp and won't leave any water, I toss a dry towel over the back of a wood chair and then place the item onto the towel. Use to do this on bathroom or kitchen floor if I was desperate, but now our miniature, long-haired dachshund gets obsessed with our laundry and will sit on anything he can. He prefers the still-warm folded laundry in the laundry basket, but anything will do....once he said on a piece of 8 x 11" paper as if it was a rug.

Very kind of you to share you brother's story, one that shows how what might seem to be just "things" can hold such meaning for us depending on who they are connected to. One of my older brothers died in 1982, and I still think of him almost every day. I inherited a piece of artwork from him, and whenever I see it, I think about all the things he liked in music, movies, design, etc., and how he was such an influence on my cultural tastes. Sometimes I open a book and see his name written inside of it and it's like a little message he is sending to me, even though I am not all superstitious or.....believe in messages from another place. I kept one of his favorite jackets and for the first few years after he died, I would take it out and wear it in the apartment for a moment or two so I could feel like he was with me. Keep writing about him, if only for yourself; all the stuff you think you will never forget, because you will, and if you have these stories and fragments to reread, they will always be there for you and the other people who loved him.

Colwin's books are so wonderful. I think it is in "Home Cooking," that she writes about learning to cook by experimenting on her friends in her tiny Village kitchen, and that whenever something didn't come out well, she would just order Chinese food. I always felt less guilty after that when I messed up a meal. For years I would give all her paperbacks to people as a gift when they moved into their first place; they elevate domesticity and friendship to a high level. When she passed away I felt like I lost someone I knew.

I love the Hookmaker with the half tea-cup. A clever design. I'd probably use it in my studio before my entryway.

So Eddie seemed kinda bitchy on Top Design. What difference does that make if you enjoy his style and the room designs he did? Do you have to like the personality of the authors you read? Until the last three episodes I thought he was going to win. Here in NYC, I don't know too many people who don't have the flea market gene, but why not pay $40 to see how an expert does it if you don't know how to? That's like someone who is a great chef saying that a beginner in the kitchen shouldn't take a cooking course on the basics. I think that Eddie is savvy about using his skills to make money. At least he has the confidence in his own creativity and keeps on making things. And he is still so young; give his personality a break. Or, don't read the stuff about him posted on AT and elsewhere.

I love, love, love the painted silhouettes in the photo with those great shadow boxes. Also, the orange wall with the white branches. Always interested in seeing a home belonging to people who like/use more than one specific period of decor; it makes it difficult to keep a cohesive, non-jarring look. Must have been hard to keep this place from getting out of hand. Bedroom with canopy a bit too girly for me. Adorable baby best accessory.

Do people really make judgments about something as minor as having personal photos around? That sounds tough even for NYC, where I live. We have one 5 X 7 b & w from our wedding, in a silver frame that was a wedding gift from my closest friend. I move it around the apartment from time to time. Now it's on a living room bookshelf, for a while it was part of a vignette in our entry hallway, with fresh flowers and some ceramic pieces. I like how my husband and I look in the photo (ten years younger, a few pounds lighter). In his home office, my husband has a 3 photo series in a black frame black frame, of us on the beach before our ceremony. He can see it when he sits at his desk. The pics are of us kissing with the wind in our hair-a little too Lifetime For Women channel for public viewing.

I would visit the website of the Appraisers Association of America to find someone local.
www.appraisersassoc.org

I'm an appraiser in NY and am very familiar with the group. To be a member (I am not, so no plug for me here) you must be highly qualified, and many of the appraisers have appeared on Antiques Roadshow (although that really shouldn't matter). You can find a generalist or a specialist this way. One thing you should note, whomever you choose-they should charge per hour, and not by percentage of what they value your items for. Nor should they be a dealer-it's a conflict of interest. Good luck.

I still use the Luxo I bought when I was in FIT in 1976. It has has been on my drawing table through my careers as a textile and product designer and writer. When the room is dark, the lamp throws a very soothing and optimistic light on the task at hand.

I have been trying to figure out what that Top Design blue was since last year's show. Thank you so much for the info!!!
I think the house is really cute. I'd think of adding a touch more of warm color here and there-the orange vases on the lime-background shelving looks great.

Oooops, I like them. But then again, I like all those tee shirts with the seams on the outside. I think this would be great in a simple nursery or toddler room-it would take wear and tear, and it looks like fun. I'm not sure what other sort of decor this word work with, though.

You've solved my problem of whether or not a lilac-gray living room would be a disaster and too girlie. It looks soothing and sophisticated. I am curious about how you managed to get the lines so straight in the bedroom-professional painters? I think you did a great job of editing the use of color.

The use of those Chinese figurines as drawer pulls is just fantastic. It's these sort of things that say that a particular person lives in a space. Charming and sophisticated at the same time.
