I'm with Tangerinegal about the placement of furniture. A long narrow console for the tv on the big wall would work nicely. The rug need to come out from underneath the sofa and leave about a foot of floorspace. You can work in the warm colors of the rug in other places in room. Adding decor with some height and colors on the console would be nice and add interest. That black chair and ottoman should go to another room, it differs too much in height in comparison to the sofa. Look for two chairs with similar height and structure as sofa. Colors could be different though and be picked up in sofa with help of cushions. For the windows I would do wooden blinds with linen curtains. And add a dimmer to that ceiling fan and get rid if those mismatching lamps!
Word on advise regarding working with your boyfriend on this. I have a husband that lets me "do anything" and "I dont care" he says. But I know he does, he just does not know much about decorating, so I working out what he liked or disliked by showing him photos of rooms, asking him what he liked or disliked. Turned out he had many opinons, small things that mattered to him much! So if you do this, you will ensure he feels part of the makeover. Have fun!

I've thought about putting a rail with hooks for cups under a RIBBA photo ledge. Would make a nice coffee station addition with syrups and so on on the ledge.

ugly houses with no personality. My parents in-law lives like this. I can never find their house, they all look the same to me (on the outside) Very depressing and beige. So beige that that was the only color my mom in law could think about when wanting to surprise us with a paint job in our house. Gosh, I felt like I lived in a box...

I also tried to get cover by medicaid (in utah) but unless you have a kid they will not insure you. You normally hear from them within a couple of weeks so you should contact them again before something happens.

Ooch big couch! Tape together flat cardboard pieces so it gives you a feeling of the dimensions of it inside the room, then walk around it with all of you in there plus maybe some guests (have a layout party? haha) then you'll know where it wont obstruct ie best place for it. If decide to float it in the room, a big round rug could soften the look and make it more intentional. Good luck!!

If you like modern and want to just do something fun instead of going with period appropriate colors, look to a strong sky blue. Light green with a hint if blue on the shutters and then pops of colors on that porch :)

I agree with RubyMae that sometimes it is better to at least speed things up when living in a rental. You just dont know when life changes in one way or another. Maybe its just like painting. Take your time doing prepwork (finding your style and what feeling your're after) then the place will come together fast and you'll be happy and can enjoy it! This is what I have done and 2 months in on my rental feels so much better than 2 years in my last place because I got a real plan on where I am heading with my projects :)

I agree! Cute post! Altough instead if sitting on my face to wake me up, my cat goes for the little more aggressive pat in the face with paw! Fun side note, we just moved from a cul-de sac in forest to a neighboorhood in town and I was worried about what might come from that, especially since he was born in the wild. Sure enough, found him sitting on top of telephone pole 40 feet up a couple of days later! My little wildcat...:)

I learned quickly after moving in with my boyfriend, that his way of living in the space had to inform the design to keep the space looking good! For example; round coffee table as he scoots the table around when putting feet on it (hey, is how he is comfortable) A square one just gets angled weirdly.. Open shelves in kitchen as he never shuts cupboards, a hamper in the bathroom so clothes does not end up on floor there. Life living with a dude eh? ;)

This is how I grew up. Did not know about money or "treats" except for on birthday and Christmas. I think it made me a better person, knowing that those things doesn't really matter. Also, made me able to live of of "nothing" as an adult. Thanks mom!

I gotta say why use plywood? I made a similar table with regular sturdy wood once, boards made for use as countertop or other. I was about $150 including hardware. This was in Sweden, could be they dont sell those big wooden boards here in US as they want you to go buy a table..?

Hi! Just wanted to shout out to you people in Seattle that are there because of the mountains, that you just HAVE TO go up to see Mt. Rainer and Mt. Baker from the west side. I just lived in Glacier which is the closest little village to Mt. Baker and felt the need to carry a camera every day! Milepost 34 has a secret pullout where you can see really big trees...don't tell anyone....;)

Look to the undertones you've got in the place; red floor, blue rug, and the brown rug looks like it has green undertones? That could be why it clashes. Adding a color that looks good with all thise tones could tie it all together, say olive green.

Furniture Layout Ideas For Trapezoidal Room? Good Questions

What a great space! And what a fun challenge! A few ideas;
- round out the sharp corner by the window wall with tall plant, lighting it from behind to cast shadows and it will add alot of texture and interest and brings a feeling of height to the room.
- installing a dimmer does great things for the ambiance at a low cost!
- repurpose anything that has the height of a coffee table into one by topping it off with a round piece of glass (Walmart, craft stores?) you could use an oversized plant pot, bigger wide basket or other, be creative and look for something with an organic form. You could spray paint the back of the glass with some color if you'd like. Then place it in front of window to reflect light in and to ground a seating area.
- make a shagrug on the cheap by sewing together bathtubs in the style.
- now is a great time to get cheap furniture off of craigslist as the students are moving out. Maybe you could do a couple of chunky leather chairs, and if their seats are no good, get euro size down pillows and put in the place of the seats and cover with inexpensive burlap that will also give an organic feel to your space.
- I would do a symmetrical furniture layout such as chairs opposite each other, anchored by rug, coffee table and a couple of floor lamps. Symmetry can make an asymmetrical space feel right.
- floating wall shelves, a few from floor to ceiling at the living room wall that's by bedroom, can add depth and architectural interest there. They are usually really cheap to get at the outlet section at ikea. I got mine for 2 dollars each! And you can spray paint them to introduce color or use a hammered effect spray paint for a more posh look.
Happy decorating!
