You're kidding me - people don't like the Montreal Olympics graphics? They're the paragon of good design! (Plus beavers are everywhere - venture a few minutes outside Vancouver and there they are. Not that this is really relevant - the whole country was semi-founded on the beaver pelt trade.) The Montreal Olympics are considered one of the best Olympics ever in terms of design. I agree. Platform beds don't need boxprings. They're designed to support just the mattress... If you don't find a mattress alone comfortable enough, a better solution might be to add a waffle foam top - it's incredibly comfortable, like sleeping on a cloud, and that's why it's used in care homes... and it's very thin. I have to get a slightly bigger fitted sheet for the mattress/wafflefoam combo - the kind for fat mattesses - but the single fatter mattress looks a lot better than a mattress on top of a box spring. If you want a tall bed, then I'd sell the platform. Apartment Therapy DC | How To: Cover Your Box Spring |

People must be mad! It's beautiful. I love plywood, though, and I prefer unconventional uses of materials. This is high quality, low-formaldehyde marine plywood and it's as good as any other wood for structural and finishing purposes. I think this room is gorgeous and warm and I'd do my kitchen this way in a second. Especially the wheels. So useful. Super great. So many try this, but so few are bold enough to produce an effect this confident or interesting. I gave a thumbs up to 3 spaces in this competition, and yours was one of them. Nice! PS Why do so many commentators seem to equate personality and creativity with lots of knickknacks and paintings? The shape and materials of this house ARE imaginative design. And the maker's contribution to the broader public discussion about living in smaller spaces has been invaluable. This living space absolutely qualifies for this competition in my view, much more than some posh, relatively generic 800 sq ft apt. And I love this aesthetic: warm, soothing, simple. (Preferably not attached to a vehicle, though.) Apartment Therapy San Francisco | Small Cool 2009: Jay's Tumbleweed House Teeny-tiny Division #13 |

I've had that photo of your sleeping loft on my computer for a while and every time I see it I become mesmerized again. Great house, beautifully simple, and I loved the dimpled metal panel in the bathroom - nice industrial touch against the wood. You have my vote. Thanks, modernguy and farmhousemoderne! We'll run your word suggestions above and see if we get any results. Green has multiple meanings so the results may be a bit skewed. More specific words or word pairs work better, but it's hard to find those in the design lexicon, which, as people have been pointing out, is full of common terms with multiple meanings (eg. modern, contemporary). The one thing this little project of ours has revealed is how much slippage there is in design terminology. If anyone has any more suggestions, post them here. PS "Chaise lounge!" I even hear people saying that in Canada, and French is one of our official languages. I just checked and chaise lounge is actually an accepted spelling in American dictionaries now, albeit as a folk etymology, but nevertheless I really doubt any NYT editor would allow it. Thanks for posting this! Just a quick correction: Jer did these *for* Ouno Design - he's not actually part of Ouno Design, except by extension. For more of his interesting NYT graphics look here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/blprnt/. And if anyone has ideas for other word comparisons, please suggest some!
