Love this! I have to laugh a little at that last picture. Cats and sandboxes do not mix. I'm definitely clicking through to see the rest of this backyard conversion. I LOVE when people create functional spaces like that.

I commented on that post yesterday, fairly early on. I never went back and read the comments that came after mine so I don't know how bad it got. Maybe mine was considered snarky. But, honestly, that room really offended me. And I would definitely have questioned it if I were face to face with them. I would expect and appreciate someone setting me right if I personally made such a judgment call. It is not okay with me to joke about contributing to the debt crisis in America. It is not okay with me to relegate your middle child to the laundry room so that his siblings can have their own rooms - I was a kid who loved a cozy nook (still do) but psychologically that arrangement would have affected even me. And it's not really okay to have major electrical appliances covering part of a child's crib. Not when you have other options.

I sincerely hope that the room doesn't actually exist, that the parents staged the whole thing for the sake of being clever and getting into the contest. I hope they really are pursuing higher education and setting THAT example for their kids. I hope, too, that the response was a wake-up call if it was a real room. People may have been too harsh or strong-worded but the sentiment was right. There was nothing to "lol" at. The whole situation needed rethinking and I hope that the comments yesterday were enough to get that kid out of the laundry room.

This can't be for real. Did they honestly spend student loan money on a washer and dryer? And then stuff their kid into a room with them? I feel like someone thought, "Hm...I want to win that contest somehow and yet I don't really have a small or cool space.... Maybe I'll stage a sleeping area in the laundry room and people will think I'm so hip and clever and I'll win prizes and be famous and popular!"

Well I guess I'm the minority. I DO have kids and I wouldn't like to see a room with a mural. I wouldn't keep it no matter how much I liked it - that would feel like wearing someone else's clothes every single day. Just uncomfortable in some way. So it wouldn't add value. And I know I'm perfectly capable of painting over it myself but it helps me get a better feel for a place when I'm not distracted by thinking about it.

Good Questions

I'm kind of surprised to be the first to say it but I'm not a fan. When people ask what my daughter would like I have a list of ideas handy but I like to leave the specifics up to them. I'll tell them activities she's into, favorite colors, characters, etc. But I hate being told exactly what gift to give (on any occasion, really, even bridal and baby showers) so I don't like to put that on anyone else.

Plus, you kind of set yourself up for disappointment if someone decides to go off-registry.

How funny! My daughter grabbed a basket the other day and asked to go hunt for eggs, too!

I love cards. I don't send many - less than 20 usually - but I have a good time picking them out and writing a little note in each one. Now, the dreaded Family Newsletter, that's another story. In my opinion those are really not worth the time, money or energy. The only people who care about them are the people they are about. And sometimes not even them! My mother never asks permission to send out my personal info every year and every year she gets something wrong. I'm always embarrassed to know that people I haven't seen or spoken to in 20 years are being made privy to the details of my pregnancy or most recent home renovation. I can only hope they are as scrooge-y as me and throw the thing away without reading it.

My aunt sent my daughter a Zhu Zhu Pets set recently. It is huge and noisy and annoying and I doubt we will keep it very long, especially after we bring more things in at Christmas time. I'm not going to be rude and turn down a gift but we have a very small home so I'm honest with people when I say that things with limited interest for her (which is pretty much any of the 3 Ps - pink, plastic, princess) won't last very long here. Space is at a premium. Toys have to last and be truly loved in order to score a permanent home on our shelves.

Of course they're out of the french bulldog calendar. That would be SO perfect for my friend who fosters rescues.

I was an only-child in a very parent-focused family so most trips we took were usually boring as can be for me. But that one particular time I was allowed to bring a friend along and it was heaven. We spent a few days in Ogunquit, Maine. I remember swimming in our hotel pool, trading pieces of saltwater taffy and being insanely jealous that my friend was allowed to wear a two-piece bathing suit and I wasn't.

I think that was the trip when I decided I would never have an only-child because for those few days I experienced what it felt like (or at least what I imagined it felt like) to have a sister and I loved it.

I wish someone would give us some cute felt food! I love the ideas but I'm not so crafty myself.

At the risk of sounding dramatic, these are kind of horrifying. Honestly, to make something so expensive that will just get filled with pee and poop and then tossed into a landfill? I can't think of anything more wasteful and thoughtless. If you want cute diapers use cloth. They're better for your wallet, better for baby and better for the environment.

Tacky. And, I know you said disposable diaper issue aside, but cloth ones serve this same purpose and are way cuter.

I signed up. So far I've only sent a box and, I have to say, I STUFFED that thing. When I look at what is available for me to pick from I feel like I should have thinned it down a bit. It's hard for me to be okay with paying $13 for a box of clothes I've never seen. It's all that much harder when I see that there are only five items in there.

We had a diaper sprayer for our oldest. For the next one, though, we're planning on using flushable, biodegradable liners. Honestly the sprayer got a little gross sometimes. It wasn't unheard of for a bit of poop to splash in the wrong direction. Yuck.

Hm. It's pretty funny to see the shenanigans those little ones get into. I have to say, though, I sure wish there was more of a "oh well, it's only stuff and I love my kids" vibe than a resentful "kids ruin your life because cell phones are more important" one. But maybe that's just me.

VERY cute! Although, once I read that the crib and mattress were gifts, I have to say that it doesn't seem quite as budget friendly. Maybe I'm just stingier than average but $700 seems more like a high average than a budget design. I guess those cute little details add up quick!
