I have the first one and I use mine as a cake stand. My guests have commented how neat it is and that they've never seen a cake stand that swivels.

My favorite is condensed milk spread on toast, topped with strawberries!

Just moved back stateside from Germany where I had a Miele vacuum. Before moving here, I sold everything electric because of the differences in voltage. I went shopping for a vacuum just last week and ended up buying another Miele. It was hard for me to spend so much for a vacuum because they are much cheaper in Germany, but I knew they worked well. BTW, I bought the upright version because they were cheaper than the canister ones.

For instant miso, I look for the ones that come with real packets of miso instead of the powder packets. This might be one:

I agree that chopsticks are best for eating salads. I also like to use them for cooking and grilling and to clean the little squiggly white things attached to egg yoke.

Mary,

Not too crazy about the acidity in Rieslings. But there are other German white wines that I do like.

If you're in the Pfalz area, make sure you hit the wine hike in Freinsheim next weekend! Hiking in the vineyards, eating and drinking wine...a great time.

I know it's the wrong season, but I was in Chamonix, France, a few weekends ago and had an excellent fondue mix of Comté, Beaufort, and Emmenthal. Lovely!

I was not happy. My company hired movers and they pretty much dumped everything in wherever they could fit it. I couldn't walk in my apartment for months without moving boxes over. I cried a lot.

Agree with funstraw in adding reading nook. Add a nice comfy chair and a small table or lower the shelves and use as a table.

Whenever I ask my (Japanese) mother for recipes, I basically only learn the ingredients when she says things like "just use a little bit of this and some of this and that." And I ask, "how much?" and she replies, "you have to taste it".

Agree with ohjodi. Basically the best way to naturally freshen the house is to clean your house. Clean linens, floors, carpet, kitchen, bathrooms using vinegar, lemon, baking soda, other natural deodorizing solutions/ingredients. I also change the air daily by opening the windows.

Best recipe with herbs de provence from my German friend is for antipasti. Here's the translated recipe (sorry, I left the metric units):

Vegetables:
3 peppers
1 zucchini
1 eggplant
200 gr. mushrooms
2 garlic cloves

Seasoning:
125 ml olive oil
250 ml sunflower oil
2 tbsp lemon juice
herbs de provence (as much or as little as you want, I use about 1 tsp)
1 tsp salt
0.5 tsp black pepper
1 pinch sugar

Coarsely chop veggies and mix in all ingredients in oven-safe casserole dish. Marinate for about 2 hours. Place in oven at 200C for 30 min. Remove from oven, let it cool a little before serving. Can be served warm or cold.

I love the informality of drinking table wine in countries like Italy and France. I recommend something like this: http://www.aplusrstore.com/product_detail.php?show=product&pid=165

Although the cups are not plastic, they are pretty sturdy.

I've used the Furminator on my carpet. It works great. The metal teeth on it are pretty rough so I probably wouldn't recommend it for furniture.

I liked the "dish-rack-off-the-counter-top" idea when I saw it in Susy's kitchen. My counter top is just as limited as her's and was interested in how she did that.

I wouldn't mind putting a towel under the rack when dishes are drying since I rarely do the dishes right before I need the counter space. It's much easier to remove the towel (once the dishes are dry) than to find a place to move the rack some place else when you need the space.
