I found an interesting website of quilt history. It seems the cross quilt pattern does have connection with the Red Cross during WWI. Often trends come and go...without awareness of the social history:

"In December, 1917, Modern Priscilla Magazine responded to President Wilson's call for in-creased fund raising for the war effort. The magazine encouraged a Quilt Campaign be conducted using the Red Cross pattern in order to raise approximately $1,000 for the purchase of ambulances, emergency equip-ment and yarn for the war effort. The pattern was created by Clara Washburn Angell. By paying a small sum of money, your name would be signed of the quilt. The quilt would then be raffled to increase the monetary take. This is the most common World War I quilt to be found. Quilt documentation projects across the country found examples of this design in their research. The quilt shown here was made in Rutland, Vermont. " from: http://www.coveringquilthistory.com/

Barlowgirl,
Not sure what style you like, but llbean has mission under-window bookcases that might work.
My biggest problem is my husband's emotional attachment to a 90's oh-so-ugly green metal futon and 70's stereo stand with dust magnet components in the family room. We also had a break-in and our very carefully saved for and mounted TV was ripped from the wall; the black bracket and cord cover are still hanging there! Good thing we only watch PBS and Netflix occasionally. The more stuff I have, the more there is to care for! Definitely first world problems.

I love "Joshua's Vintage Daydream" and visit the tour again and again. It is an elegant, warm home and I either missed it in the top 100 or it didn't make it. I did see some of my favorites, but not Joshua's lovely home!

Roadblock to a clean kitchen? My retired husband who eats all day long! And no dish washer! At least our kitchen is well-used.

Wow! Kathryn this is a beautiful renovation and functional kitchen. I checked out your blog and your garden is amazing! I am unfamiliar with Sonoma gardening so am wondering how you keep it irrigated during the week when you are not there? Perhaps there is enough rain to keep it healthy? I live in New Mexico, so this would be more difficult here, I think.

I just visited Olga's site and noticed that "HT" is clearly stamped on her pallet. And it looks great in her living room.

Thank you for sharing a personal post. I spent three years caring for my mom and being with her as she died last August. I learned so much about letting go and am re-learning how to be home and how to use my time and energy on a different focus. She, and my time with her, taught me much about the beauty of imperfection.

Binge cleaner! Mail and paperwork is the most idfficult to keep up with. I have cancelled most of my catalogs but the charity mail keeps piling up...and my husband won't cancel anything and likes to keep every project on the table ready to pick up any minute. Keep my kitchen clean though!
