I would stear clear of any and all architects. We fired ours and ended up taking our detailed ideas and drawings for our whole house to a structural engineer who ACTUALLY listened to what we wanted and created all the drawings and engineered it so it would pass code and he was a quarter of the price of an architect alone.

Architects are very taken up with developing their own portfolios that mimic their style and don't seem to listen to a word the homeowner wants.

Cost of building with shipping containers - it is NOT cheaper than building the old-fashioned way. Cost of containers has increased over the past 3 years as many container mfg have closed down due to the reduction in shipping goods. If you are building in an area with little to no building codes this could be a very cheap building option but with normal regulatory oversight and building codes, most container structures require reinforcing steel placement and the interior finish work is extensive so the savings in the core are negated.

We are building with containers for other reasons than cost - most of all because we are sick of traditional homes and like the recycled aspect. Our containers are 15yo and just got off a ship bringing goods from China....its an exciting process.

Just like any home, some like cottages or farmhouses where others like to think out of the box. What I don't think people realize is that every state has a few container homes, some more than others. We are building one (cottonwoodmeadow.com) and the shipping containers are starting to arrive today. After talking to the guys that deal with the containers, these homes are EVERYWHERE!
Container homes have tons of benefits beyond recycling, fire protection, strength, cool, unusual interiors (or exteriors depending on how you insulate). They are just another fantastic way to build a house that doesn't look like your neighbor or burn to the ground in 10 minutes. I particularly love this house and I featured it on my blag last week, its brilliant.

This is Oh so familiar. We have been living in a temporary residence (1972 double wide mobile home) for 3 yrs now while we build our new home.
It has no insulation left and awful pseudo glass windows. Each winter we put bubble wrap on all the windows and then window film, spray foam insulate all the cracks and even have packing tape covering some cracks we can't get foam into. It a great look (sarcasm) and in the winter each morning its low 40's in the house. We have a heater in the bathroom and put foam pipe covers over the base of the door to keep it warm in there. I use a hot water bottle in bed and we do have a little pellet stove that we use for a few hours in the evening.

Its hard to function and get things done when its this cold inside, you get dressed immediately in the morning into your clothes that you stored in the bathroom and put your boots and jacket on in the house. But its fantastic not having a gas or large electric bill. I will be happier when the new house is done and we have radiant floor heating throughout but it sure makes you appreciate a little think like heat.

gorgeous, great job. I tried something like this and it was an immense amount of work and doesn't look nearly as fantastic.
great inspiration to try again:-)

Don't think most Re-Nest followers are going to use McMasterCarr (rip offs used for commercial applications only). I am sure most DIYers use Home Depot or Lowes where a 1/2" flange is $7. And the flange look is way cooler.

I think it looks great, thank goodness it doesn't look like the other homes, huge improvement and nice not to have every house look the same. Nice job.

Wow - what a weak argument this piece makes, hardly worth the cyber space.
Increased manpower - HOW IS THAT NOT GREEN!!
Yes it takes fossil fuels to cut out and weld the containers and shipping to the site. But no where near what it takes to harvest trees, process, transport to retail, transport to site, tools on site to cut, nail etc... Not even close.
Then you have to look at the energy to transport an emtpy container back to Asia to be re-filled or for that container to be scrapped versus utilizing it as a home/office/store.

And yes some of these could have contaminates on the floor, easily replaced if you find this is so with recycled wood etc..
Some may contain lead paint exteriors but if you insulate one side of it and then paint or surface the other its completely contained and doesn't require removal or risk as its encapsulated.

I think Brian should do some real time data analysis and LCA of this process versus a traditional home building process and only print when he has some useful data and more than "increased manpower".

Home DIY and repair for women - before I met my significant other I was desperate for help, guidance anything so I could fix things myself. My mom is also a single gal and I try to help her via phone but she would love a class to learn how to use a drill, saw and some basic repairs and builds.

Fantastic blog post. We are building a house (energy efficient) and are choosing roof colors and really want a white roof. These numbers are the hard sell - LOVE IT.
Thanks for the info - white roofs are a real change we can quantify.

Very few producers of OSB (seen here) or plywood use formaldehyde anymore (times have changed people)

I have telecommuted for the past 16 months and LOVE IT. I don't miss the rollercoaster of office politics or getting bogged down in the office gossip. I have a much better view of my company as a hole not being daily influenced by grumpy co-workers.
On the work at home side, the utility increase at home is negligible and the savings in gas, wear and tear on my car and not going out to for lunch or stopping by the grocery store daily is HUGE!
At my company we use MS Communicator so my supervisor knows where I am and when and I work hard to make sure I am always available (between working hours) and responsive. I appreciate the ability to work at home and take it as a privilege. I do not think that I miss out on anything from not being in the office and love the money and carbon savings.
As far as out-sourcing overseas, my last company did this for their IT work and its been a disaster with time-zone and communication issues. I don't think that most jobs that qualify for telecommuting would then be taken a further step to outsourcing overseas. From my experience, unless a mfg position, these jobs are safe from this risk due to the nature of the work. My company is slowly embracing the work at home and concentrating more on results than hours of useless face time.

Bagless -at my last roommate situation we had a bagless DYSON, best vac EVER, so easy and amazing performance with 3 dogs and 2 cats. When I got married and inherited my husband's bagged vac, its awful, the bags are a pain, they fill up in no time, you have to constantly buy more, emptying it is no easier than a bagless, its awful.

This place is fantastic, we toured it a few years ago when it was on the Build It Green Home Tour. There is another container home in Richmond, CA just up the road and hopefully this year we will break ground on our hybrid Shipping Container/ICF home in the foothills of CA, fingers crossed.
