I agree with Fire Wife Katie - a new light would be a huge improvement and really draw the eyes upward to the medallian. And a bold, modern fixture would contrast very nicely with the large, traditional mirror and medallion. I'm picturing something like this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20131887 The Ikea light mirrors the circles of the mirror and medallion, as well as the straight lines of the furniture and crown molding.
