We recently adopted 2 11-year-old brother and sister dogs because of something like this. Their owner since puppyhood fell in love with a man who is severely allergic to dogs (like, face starts bleeding if he itches it with any dog dander on him). He is a naturopathic doctor and has tried everything to try to fix this, to no avail. We ended up buying her house and adopting her dogs, and she visits them once a week to take them for a hike, and housesits when we're away. A great solution for everyone, but very difficult to find, I know.

Green smoothie for newbies:

-2 oranges, peeled
-1/2 cup yogurt (I use homemade whole milk)
-1 tsp vanilla extract
-a little sweetener of choice (optional - I use 10 drops of stevia for a pretty sweet one)
-big handful of spinach
-6-8 ice cubes

Tastes like a creamsicle.

I <3 my skinny Microplane.

Just wanted to add that the Professional series of what you've got up there as the "Microplane Fine Grater" rates insanely well on Amazon. I guess they've gone through a few revisions, and people rave about t hem.

My fiance and I are in love with the idea of the "Go Nuts" Mykea print on our 5x5 Expedit, given our love for both squirrels and tubas.

Now just to find the doors on sale for $10 again...

I clean after cooking, or sometimes the next morning. But what drives me absolutely batty is trying to cook in a dirty kitchen, so I try to avoid that if at all possible.

Also, I hate dishwashers. But I am glad to have one. I use it as a giant draining rack and love it! I always drip-dry my dishes; I'm not someone who thinks that they aren't done until they're put away. I leave the dishwasher open overnight, but it's nice to be able to close the dishwasher and thus hide the dirty dishes at a moment's notice.

The other thing I find with hand-washing everything is that the things that can't go in the dishwasher (knives, some pans, plastic things) don't go unwashed. I grew up in a dishwasher household and there would always be a (neat) little pile of things that were a little harder to wash (because you had to break out the dish soap and sponge/brush). It would always sit there for a few days before someone finally got it together to wash those things.

Dulce de leche from this recipe (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/dulce-de-leche-recipe/index.html):

1.5 gallons organic milk: ~$8
72 ounces sugar: ~$5
vanilla beans/extract: ~$3
12 half pint canning jars: ~$12

For a total of $28 for 12 awesome gifts that everyone will love (I find that I get 2 cups per quart of milk rather than the 1 cup that the recipe suggests.)!

I didn't see any of the food gifts I've given during the last several holiday seasons:

- Vanilla extract - 1 oz. beans per 1 cup vodka. This one has some real value. For $5, including the bottle, you can give someone 8 oz of fantastic extract, which would set you back about $20 if you bought it pre-made. (Recipe here: http://www.vanillareview.com/make-vanilla-extract/ and my favorite source of vanilla beans here: http://www.vanillaproductsusa.com/)

- Dulce de Leche: This year I work at a goat dairy so I'm actually making the goat milk equivalent, cajeta. This is very easy, keeps forever in the fridge and is SO delicious. (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/dulce-de-leche-recipe/index.html)

I love it when interests collide on the internet. I was looking at all different kinds of cargo bikes and there was a very recognizable site talking about a specific one!

They're Danish, though.
